Lesson Title & Big Idea: Diversity Grade Level: 2nd Lesson Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to integrate art with math to show students that there is diversity within the classroom, and that diversity should be celebrated.
Class Periods Required: 2 class periods are required for this lesson. Key Concepts (2-3): Engage students in a discussion about diversity that will allow them to answer the essential questions. Use mathematics to explore basic diversity within the classroom
Essential Questions (2-3): What is diversity? Is there diversity within our classroom, school, and community? How can we celebrate diversity?
Lesson Objectives: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/new- teacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1)
Students will be able to answer the question what is diversity? Students will be able to recognize diversity within their class and community. Students will be able to apply their mathematical knowledge to see diversity by looking at the quantitative differences within the class. Students will be able to measure their body cutouts and compare the measurements.
Artistic Perceptions Art Criticism FA 3: Identify the following in art works: geometric shapes, geometric forms, foreground, background, real textures, contrast/variety of colors

Contrast FA 2: Identify and use color contrast
Product/Performance Drawing FA 2: Change pressure to create two values using crayon or pencil
Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
Integrated Content Areas: 1. Visual Art 2. Mathematics Identify & define common vocabulary/concepts that connect visual art with the non-art content area. Diversity Unit Height
Anticipatory Set (Gaining Attention): First, the students will look at a painting by the artist Jerry Jordan and engage in a VTS discussion about what the painting is depicting (http://www.news.wisc.edu/newsphotos/images/Jordan_MSC_mural 04_7587.jpg). Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set): Students will line up their body cutouts in size order to see how all students are diverse.
Lesson Activities & Procedure(s): 1. Students will engage in a VTS discussion about a painting depicting diversity 2. Next, students will create a collage as a class to show what they think diversity is. Students will discuss the collage they made and compare/contrast it to the painting they previously looked at. 3. After the students have created a collage, we will work on body cutouts. Each student will be paired up and have their partner trace their body. 4. The students will then cut out the body that was traced for them. Students will be able to decorate their body cutout in a way that represents them. The cutout can be a realistic representation if they choose. 5. On the second day of the lesson, students will use any measuring tools they want in order to determine the height of their body cutout. After students have had time to experiment with different sized units, the class will agree upon one unit to compare. Students will compare the heights of all the cutouts in the class, and line them up in height order. 6. Lastly, we will have a discussion about how diversity can be applied to what they did with their body cutouts. Students should be able to see that there is diversity within the classroomnot only among height, but also the visual representations of their cutouts because no cutout will look exactly the same.
Magazines for the collage Large paper for the cutouts Scissors Rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, etc. Colored pencils, markers, paint (students will not be limited to just one medium, so have as many as possible.)
Lesson adaptations for challenged learners: Limit the amount of potential units so students dont become overwhelmed, and pair struggling learners with students that could act as peer tutors.
Lesson extensions/enrichments for gifted learners: Gifted students can be asked to record the heights of all students and plot the data in a way they think would be appropriate.
Formative Assessment strategies: Students will be assessed during the VTS discussion because Summative Assessment strategy: I will not have a summative assessment for this specific activity. Art Integration Lesson Plan Template 4
although there are no wrong answers, they can be assessed on their responses and critical thinking skills. Students will be assessed on their math knowledge by being able to discuss which units would be the most efficient. However, there will be a summative assessment at the end of the math unit about measurement. What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? I think students will have some prior knowledge about diversity. Students will also have prior knowledge about measurement and comparing data.
How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson? Imagining: Students will use their imagination by creating the collage because it allows them to imagine what their own idea of diversity is. Exploring: Students will be able to explore math concepts by using different units of measurement to find the height of their body cutouts. Experimenting: Students will be able to experiment with different mediums for the collage as well as when they decorate their cutouts.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways? Students will solve for the height of their body cutouts by using different units for measurement, and solve the problem of which unit is best by exploring each option and figuring out which is most efficient.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? Students will routinely reflect on their learning by engaging in discussion about each portion of the lesson. The end of the lesson will encourage reflection because students will look at the cutouts of their classmates and discuss how diverse their own classroom community is.
How will this lesson engage students in assessing their own work and the work of peers? Students will assess their own work when completing their body cutout decorations. They will assess the work of their peers when they are comparing the heights and diverse decorations on each body cut out.

What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work? Students will not have to revise their work on their body cutout because this portion of the lesson is supposed to encourage creativity, so there shouldnt be a body cut out that needs to be improved because it is supposed to reflect who they are. Students will be given the opportunity to improve their understanding by using several types of measurement and discussing the efficiency of each unit, and decide which units would be most appropriate for different things (i.e. measuring a football field, measuring distance from one city to another, etc).
What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson? Students will share their learning in this lesson by engaging in a VTS, creating the collage, and engaging in discussion about the diversity of the cutouts.
