CHEE 3363: Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers

Homework #1
Due date: Wednesday, January 22, at 4:00pm.
Recommended reading: Fox, sections 1.41.6.
1. (Newtons law) In a pollution control experiment, very small solid particles of mass 4 10
kg are dropped in air. The terminal speed of the particles is 6 cm/s. The drag on the particles
is given by F
= kV , where V is the instantaneous speed of the particle. Find the value of
the constant k and the time required to reach 99% of the terminal speed.
2. (Newtons law) In the hands of a skilled archer, a medieval English longbow was reported to
be accurate at ranges of 100 m or more. If the maximum altitude of an arrow is less than
h = 11 m while traveling to a target that is 110 m away from the archer, estimate the speed
and angle at which the arrow must leave the bow. Neglect air resistance. Plot the required
release speed and angle as a function of height h.
3. (Newtons law) A sky diver of mass of 60 kg jumps from an airplane. The aerodynamic drag
force acting on the sky diver is F
= kV
, where k = 0.25 N-s
. Determine the maximum
speed of free fall for the sky diver and the speed reached after 150 m of fall.
4. (Dimensions) For each quantity listed, indicate dimensions in terms of M (mass), L (length),
T (temperature), and t (time), and give typical English and SI units:
(a) Power
(b) Pressure
(c) Viscosity
(d) Elastic modulus
(e) Angular velocity
(f) Energy
(g) Moment of a force
(h) Momentum
(i) Shear stress
(j) Strain
(k) Angular momentum
As an example, the dimensions of velocity are L/t, and the units are m/s (SI) and ft/s
5. (Mathematics) Given three vectors a = 2i +j, b = i k, and c = 4i 4j +k, calculate:
(a) a(e
, e

, e

) (i.e. a in spherical coordinates)

(b) b(e
, e

, k) (i.e. b in cylindrical coordinates)

(c) a c
(d) c (b a)
(e) The vector projection of c on the plane formed by a and b
6. (Mathematics) Given a two-dimensional vector eld v = 4xyzi + xy
zj + xy
k, calculate:
(a) v
(b) v
(c) v
(d) v v
