Rationale: Screen-Cast-O-Matic allows teachers to record their computer screen and voice
in order to share lessons, online events, or instructions. It is instrumental in flipped
classroom theory, and can also benefit intrafaculty community, students on long-term
absence, and parent-teacher communications.

HELPFUL TIPS
1. Audiences get bored quickly! Try to keep your video under 1 minute, and use as
many visuals as you can. For flipped classes, try to keep the video around 5-7
minutes.
2. Pause by pressing ALT+P where natural (between paragraphs, etc.) and then restart
with ALT+P. Its not possible to edit your video unless you pay for the PRO version,
or find alternate software.
3. The internal microphone is not exceptional- try to have fans and AC units turned off
when recording. Other people can be speaking near you if you project your voice,
but youll want to avoid having too much ambient noise in your vicinity.
4. Sometimes, Chrome makes the cursor look differently than it should. It might be
beneficial to use Internet Explorer.

BEGINNERS:
We will go over this step by step. Feel free to ask questions as youd like.
1. First, open SOM- youll know it is open when you see the dotted lined square with this in the
middle.

2. Next, find a picture online of something that is representative of your discipline. I recommend a
royalty free site such as http://www.freeimages.com/ so that we dont run into any legal issues.
3. Copy the art onto a word or google doc. Then drag the dotted square around that picture. It
can be helpful to write down the basic script of what you want to say outside of the dotted
lines- it wont be seen, but it will help you to sound more coherent.

4. Once youve said your first fact about yourself, press ALT+P to pause your recording until you
have the next picture and fact about yourself. Once its set up, simply press ALT+P to start
again, but take a breath when it starts recording again, or your sentences will run together.
a. By pausing after each step, it becomes easier to collect your thoughts, which is
important since you cannot revise anything once youve recorded it, unless you pay for
the Pro version.

5. Consider covering some of the following points about yourself:
a. Name, subject, and school
b. Why you became a teacher
c. Hobbies
d. Favorite book (for English teachers)/activity (PE)/Mathematical contribution or concept/
e. Honors & awards
f. Where you go/ what you do on vacation. (You can send pictures from your cell phone to
your email account and open them from there.)
g. What youre looking forward to in the upcoming school year

6. Once your video is finished, save it to your youtube page.

Advanced:
If youve already used screen-cast-o-matic, take your technology a step further by using
www.educanon.com .
This software allows you to take an existing video and add multiple choice questions at key points.
Additionally, students can take a short constructed response answer at the end of the video. Educanon
