Presentation of Learning

Intro: Hello my name is Robin Frodsham. I am a freshman at Da Vinci Science high

school, class of 2017. I am here to present my learning.
hook: I love drawing and I have found that drawing is very similar to my classes in the
following ways: expressing creativity, ideas, and feelings. It also requires technique, precision
and lots of practice, just like my classes in school.
bridge: during my time at Da vinci I have discovered my limitations and have striven to
exceed them.
thesis: Today I will be presenting my mastery in English, Physics, and ASL. The
essential skills I am presenting are EKS # 1 for English, #2 for Physics, and # 1 for ASL.

English
The first class I would like to present for is English. When writing different papers one
express their ideas and feelings while proving their point, much like how drawing brings out your
inner thoughts and emotions, illustrating them on paper.
The EKS I will be presenting for is # 1, Sentence Structure. This means i am able to
compose simple, compound and complex sentences. A simple sentence is an independent
clause containing one subject and verb. A compound sentence consists of two independent
clauses combined with a coordinator. A complex sentence is an independent clause joined with
a dependent clause.
short summary of assignment:For this skill we created a journal with a series of
vignettes portraying our life experiences. Each vignette contained literary devices in order to
give them more depth. Most importantly the vignettes were required to have correct grammar
and sentence structure. Here is my childhood vignette.
evidence of mastery: I know I did well on this assignment because I successfully
followed all the requirements. There are no run on sentences or fragments and my work
contains the literary devices such sensory details, that give details that appeal to all five of your
senses. For example A masculine whisper drifted to my ears I also included the different
sentence structures. An example of a simple sentence is Somebody just ran into the column!
For compound sentence, Someone touched me and I jumped out of my skin. An example for a
complex sentence is With my back back pressed up against the wall, I Pulled my knees up to
my chest.
critical eye:I could have improved my vignette by simply proof reading it. There are
small grammatical errors. Such as no spaces between Colorado. On and cousins,Seth
deep understanding:This deliverable helped me completely understand sentence
structure because i would usually just write and pay no mind sentence structure. This leaves my
work plain, boring and repetitive. Essential skill #1 states that i should be able to compose
simple, compound and complex sentences without fragments or run on sentences. As I have
illustrated I can incorporate these types of sentences in my work with a variety of different
structures. If I were to teach this skill I would emphasize the need to incorporate a variety of
sentence structures so the written work isnt bland.
This concludes my English portion I will now move on to Physics.

Physics
The next class Im presenting for is Physics. Physics is like drawing because it
require precision. To be able to draw the same thing over and over again, like drawing a cartoon
strip, you need to be accurate and precise much like solving equations for velocity. The EKS I
will be presenting is measuring motion. This means I am able to calculate, graph and define an
object's displacement,velocity and acceleration.
short summary of assignment: This is my Eks #2 quiz. For this assignment we were
quizzed on our understanding of measuring motion. That includes vectors, scalars, graphing
motion and calculating velocity.
Evidence of mastery: This quiz shows my mastery. I was able to set up the equation to
calculate time using the variables. As well as graphing the velocity of an object on a position vs.
time graph
critical eye: I was unable to demonstrate my knowledge on vectors and scalars
because when asked to give an example I drew a vector and a scalar. I should have have given
a more specific example such as 5 m/s east for vector, because it includes magnitude and
direction and 5m/s for scalar because it shows just magnitude. Also my calculation for
calculating the distance went awry. The setup was correct, 200 miles over 1 hour multiplied by
1609 meters over 1 mile multiplied by 1 hour over 3609 seconds. But somewhere it went wrong
and the correct answer should have been 89.2 instead of 8.89. The wrong answer messed up
the rest of the equation. To find distance you multiply time and velocity and plugging in the
values I should have gotten exactly 446 meters west. On question 5b, I was asked to graph the
scenario of Mrs. Larson pushing a car for 60 seconds to 25 mters away and then stopping for 30
seconds. I would graph this on a position vs. time graph. The first point would be plotted on
(60,25) because she goes 25 meters in 60 seconds. the line would be straight because she is
moving at a constant velocity. The second point would be plotted on (90,25) because she is not
moving for 30 seconds.
deep understanding: this deliverable refined my knowledge of measuring motion.
Essential skill #2 states that I should be able to calculate, graph and define an objects
displacement, velocity, and acceleration. As I have shown you I can, with given information,
calculate velocity, time and distance as well as graphing velocity. If I had to teach this skill I
would stress that they practice solving the equations because time after time it gets easier to
solve because you know what youre doing.
This concludes my Physics portion I will now move onto my ASL Portion.

ASL
The last class I am presenting for is American Sign Language. ASL is like drawing
because they both tell a story and require a lot of practice. LIke drawing a person your signs get
better and easier to do the more you do it. THe EKS I will be presenting is signing. This means
that I am able to create language using signs in a variety of topics through vocabulary
comprehension.
short summary of assignment: For ASL we went to California school for the Deaf in
Riverside. Its a school where deaf children of 18 months to 20 years of age attend. The school
offers a better alternative than the regular mainstream schools we attend. While at the school
we met fellow signers from Da vinci Design. I met 3 different people and using the introductory
signs we learned I started a conversation.
Evidence of mastery: To start a conversation I would tap them lightly on the shoulder or
wave. Then I introduced my self saying HI MY NAME ROBIN, WHAT YOU NAME? When
fingerspelling I would position my hand near my face so they can watch my face for grammar
and read my signs at the same time. The correct grammar for asking a question is to furrow
your eyebrows and lean your head in but when asking a yes or no question I would raise my
eyebrows. Following the introduction, a series of questions followed including WHAT SCHOOL
YEAR YOU? and WHAT SCHOOL YOU GO TO? in which their reply would be in Lunas case a
JUNIOR at DV DESIGN.
critical eye: Fingerspelling comprehension is quite difficult for me because everyone
has a different speed and form when fingerspelling. When trying to learn learn Lunas name it
took me two tries to understand what she was saying. Now in class when a fellow classmate
signs something I can quickly understand what they are saying and continue the conversation.
deep understanding: Signing with the Design sign language students helped me
conversate with other people in sign language. EKS #1 states that i should be able to create
language using the signs I learned in a variety of topics through vocabulary comprehension. As I
have shown you I can start and continue a conversation with the correct signs and grammar. If I
had to teach this skill I would emphasize the need to learn the proper technique and for each
sign. There are many signs that look similar and they are easily mixed up if not signed properly.

reflection/habit of mind of quality: Throughout this semester I have put a lot of effort
into turning in the highest quality of work I am capable of. This is my bird house project that my
team and I constructed. It shows my quality because I put a lot of effort to complete it. I turned it
in on time with all the needed requirements.

SLC Action Plan Goal: One of my goals from student lead conferences were for
English, that I would proofread my work. I always had minor grammatical errors in my work and i
wanted to improve upon that. This semester I have gotten better in proofreading my work but it
isnt enough. Through the next semester I will strive to complete this goal and get rid of all errors
in my papers.
This concludes my presentation. Thank you for listening. I will now take your questions.
