2011-2012
High School Health Education
The essentials of health will be taught emphasizing indiidual responsibility for attaining
wellness through preentatie maintenance! The "ichigan "odel #ealth Curriculum is a
comprehensie program instructed through a ariety of methods designed to educate and
prepare our students with the s$ills necessary to achiee and maintain life long health!
%ur curriculum includes the following areas& nutrition' emotional and personal health' the
ris$ of drugs' alcohol' and tobacco' and physical actiity! There is also a comprehensie
education lesson regarding (e)ually Transmitted Diseases' *!+!D!,(' #+-' and the
reproductie organs! (1 Semester)
High School Physical Education
Physical Education will proide basic introductions to muscular strength' muscular
endurance' cardioascular efficiency' fle)ibility and motor s$ills by highlighting safe
techni.ue and arious fitness leels for future e)ercise classes! (tudents will wor$
towards achieing or maintaining an appropriate leel of fitness that will improe their
oerall physical health for years to come! Physical fitness leels will be assessed
according to the Presidential /itness Test standards as well as the high school E)emplary
Physical Education Curriculum 0EPEC1 will be instructed! (tudents will also e)pect and
emphasize personal and social character trait s$ills! Ealuations will include pre2post
fitness' sport s$ill' and written $nowledge assessments! (1 Semester)
Advanced Strength and Conditioning
This course is designed for the serious student who wishes to improe aerobic capacity
and muscle strength' tone' fle)ibility' and endurance! (tudents will pre-test' set goals'
chart progress' and post-test for improement! +nstruction will proide $nowledge and
e)perience in arious styles' methods' physical actiities and motiational techni.ues!
The student will complete intensie goal-drien strength training wor$outs as well as
participate in a ariety of demanding aerobic fitness wor$outs! *ll actiity will adhere to
the components of e)ercise! Ealuation will include goal achieements' demonstration of
independent wor$ ethic' and sub3ect $nowledge! This course is only aailable for students
who hae passed weight training! (1 Semester/Full Year)
Weight Training
Students will be introduced to the advanced skills of weight training as well as the other
elements of fitness (Aerobic Fitness, Muscular Fitness, Plyometrics, and Core Stability,!
Students will com"lete individuali#ed and class workouts based on certain as"ects (such
as fitness levels and goals! $y the com"letion of this course students will understand the
benefits of a healthy lifestyle style as well as the knowledge of how to incor"orate those
benefits into their everyday lives! Students in this class will learn the "hysical benefits of
weight training to the body as well as the mental and social benefits to their lives! This
course is only aailable for students who hae passed 4

Semester/Full Year)
Team Sports
This electie course is geared towards team sports and is only aailable for students who
hae passed 4
th
grade PE and #ealth! This class will strictly inole team sports that
re.uire students to wor$ cooperatiely towards a common goal! (tudents will also
deelop $ey communication s$ills as well as real world application of wor$ing with
people you are not familiar with and trying to achiee a common goal! (tudents will
participate in team sports such as (occer' /ootball' 5as$etball' -olleyball' #andball' and
#oc$ey 0the actiities may ary according to aailability of facilities and e.uipment1!
*ssessment will include pre2post sport s$ills' written $nowledge assessments' and ability
to wor$ cooperatiely! (1 Semester/Full Year)
Personalized Fitness
Personalized /itness is a course designed for indiiduals who would li$e to set fitness
goals and wor$ toward achieement throughout the course! 6e will combine classroom
instruction and physical actiity to understand different forms of e)ercise' benefits of
fitness' safe e)ercise plan' understanding how to trac$ heart rate and setting fitness goals!
Ealuation will include goal achieements' demonstration of independent wor$ ethic' and
sub3ect $nowledge! +f you want to set positie health habits' train for a sport' or 3ust
maintain or improe physical condition' this is the course for you7 This class is not meant
for indiiduals who do not want to wor$ to their highest fitness potential! This course is
only aailable for students who hae passed 4

grade PE and #ealth! (1 Semester)
First Aid
(tudents will learn current 8ed Cross guidelines for arious first aid procedures! They
will also learn how to perform assistance using automated e)ternal defibrillation 0*ED1'
CP8' rescue breathing' and other handle sudden illnesses! 5y ta$ing this class the student
will be able to obtain 8ed Cross certification in these areas! *ssessment will include
homewor$' written papers' .uizzes and tests!
Sports Officiating
This course will prepare indiiduals to actiely register and officiate athletic actiities
upon completion of high school! (tudents will receie instruction in the application and
understanding of rules' ethics' appropriate dress' proper officiating mechanics' and
professional official2school relationships! +ncluded will be information concerning
"#(** registration and obtaining contracts! *ssessment will include homewor$' written
papers' .uizzes and tests!
Coaching
This course is designed for students interested in coaching upon completion of high
school! This course includes practical' releant information that is appropriate for
beginning leel interscholastic coaches! The material is generic' rather than sport specific
and will loo$ at problems and solutions faced by most coaches and how to it may be used
in a practical setting! This course will help a student to use $nowledge in order to
enhance the sports e)periences of young athletes!
Eercise Science
This is a course designed to meet the needs of students interested in e)ploring heath
sciences and physical education! The course consists of lecture and introductory lab
e)perience in anatomy' physiology' $inesiology' and nutrition! (tudents apply these
concepts in career opportunities such as the following& sports physiology' physical
therapy' recreation' sports management' e)ercise physiology' teaching' coaching' and
sports medicine! (1 Semester)
