REGENERATION
LAB
PROBLEM:
Which
part
of
the
planarian
will
regenerate
first
when
trisected,
anterior,
posterior
or
mid
section?
HYPOTHESIS:
If
trisected,
then
the
mid
section
will
regenerate
first.
THEORY:
Planaria
are
flatworms
that
reproduce
sexually.
The
planaria
are
hermaphrodites
which
means
that
they
consist
of
both
Male
and
female
gonads.
In
sexual
reproduction,
two
planarians
meet,
exchanged
sperm
through
the
genital
pores,
When
Gametes
(which
are
matured
haploid
germ
cells)
from
each
planaria
combine
sperm
is
and
received
by
the
other
planaria.
An
egg
forms
with
a
new
planaria
in
it.
When
conditions
are
less
the
ideal,
planaria
are
able
to
reproduce
asexually.
For
asexual
reproduction,
the
planaria
detaches
his
tale
end
and
each
half
regrows
the
lost
parts
by
regeneration.
When
both
half
of
the
body
regrows
then
you
have
two
planaria,
then
the
two
planaria
reproduce
and
make
another
planaria.
Planaria
can
reproduce
asexually
through
the
process
of
regeneration.
Regeneration
is
when
a
planaria
can
be
cut
up
into
pieces,
and
each
piece
can
regrow
into
a
complete
organism.
The
reason
why
I
thought
that
the
mid
section
would
regenerate
first
was
because
the
mid
section
can
grow
the
Anterior
or
the
posterior
at
the
same
time
when
the
Anterior
would
have
to
grow
the
mid
section
before
the
Posterior
and
the
Posterior
would
have
to
also
grow
the
mid
section
first.

CONCLUSION:
In
this
lab
we
trisected
a
planaria
to
see
which
of
the
three
parts
will
regenerate
first.
I
hypothesized
that
the
mid
section
would
regenerate
first.
My
data
shows
by
day
7
the
Anterior
had
regenerated
the
most
cells.
On
day
7
the
Anterior
had
completely
regenerated
mid
section
and
started
to
form
the
Posterior.
In
the
7th
grade
37%
of
Anterior
cells
grow
back
first,
49%
of
the
Mid
Section
grew
back
first,
and
only
14%
of
the
Posterior
sections
grow
back
first.
In
my
class
(6th
period)
we
had
similar
and
different
percentages.
43%
of
the
Anterior
grew
back
first,
50%
of
the
mid
section
grew
back
first,
and
only
7%
of
the
Posterior
grew
back
first.
There
was
a
6%
difference
for
the
Anterior,
a
1%
difference
for
Mid
Section,
and
7%
difference
With
the
Posterior.
Between
my
class
and
the
whole
seventh
grade
I
think
the
data
ended
up
pretty
similar.
In
conclusion,
my
hypothesis
was
correct.
The
planaria
will
regenerate
when
trisected
and
the
mid
section
is
likely
to
regenerate
first.
ANALYSIS
Radu, Brandon
70:56:81:af:d8:f1
In
this
lab,
the
data
shows
that
my
results
were
valid.
If
you
look
at
the
graph
you
would
see
that
my
classes
results
were
very
similar
to
the
whole
entire
grades
results.
In
every
single
class
about
50%
had
Mid
Sections
that
regenerated
first,
35%
of
the
Anterior
Regenerated
first,
and
about
10%
percent
of
the
Posterior
regenerating
first.
I
order
to
make
my
results
more
reliable
I
would,
assign
more
then
one
planaria
to
each
group
so
then
we
would
have
two
times
they
data
to
compare
to.
Planaria
stem
cells
are
different
from
human
stem
cells.
Twenty
percent
of
planaria
stem
cells
are
totipotent
throughout
their
lifetime.
While
in
embryonic
form,
humans
are
mostly
comprised
of
pluripotent
or
embryonic
stem
cells.
This
changes
as
humans
develop.
By
adulthood,
stem
cells
(now
call
somatic
cells)
are
only
found
in
small
pockets
around
the
body
in
bone
marrow,
teeth,
blood,
blood
vessels,
gut,
heart
and
liver.
Embryotic
stem
cells
are
pluripotent
when
planaria
stem
cells
are
Totipotent.
The
difference
between
the
two
is
totipotent
stem
cells
can
give
rise
to
more
types
of
cells
then
pluripotent
stem
cell
The
controversy
over
stem
cell
research
is
less
than
what
it
used
to
be.
This
situation
is
due
to
two
new
ways
of
scientist
obtaining
stem
cells,
both
IPS
and
STAP.
So
now
HES
is
no
longer
the
only
way
to
obtain
stem
cells.
IPS,
or
Induced
Pluripotent
stem
cells,
is
a
way
of
making
fake
pluripotent
stem
cells,
by
adding
genes
to
a
differentiated
cell
to
undifferentiated
it.
STAP,
or
stimulus-triggered
acquisition
of
pluripotency,
is
another
way
of
creating
fake
stem
cells
through
a
differentiated
cell
until
it
reforms
back
into
its
original
un-differentiated
form.
Although
these
two
methods
have
proved
that
they
work,
scientists
are
still
not
sure
of
the
effects
that
the
STAP
therapy
can
provide.
HES
is
another
method
for
obtaining
pluripotent
embryonic
stem
cells.
The
reason
there
was
and
still
is
a
little
controversy
over
HES
is
because
in
order
to
obtain
embryonic
stem
cells,
an
embryo
must
be
destroyed.
Even
though
the
embryo
is
usually
six
weeks
old.
