In August 2013, my teaching certification program at TCNJ was completed. A rigorous secondary teaching certification course
with The New Jersey College resulted in my becoming introduced to a wide array of classroom strategies to deal with
everything from pacing in classes, to how to best handle group work, to debate situations, and to devising the best ways for
students to stay on-topic. Being an experienced teacher of secondary students prior to this course, I have been able to obtain a
great deal from this program. Instruction format included two on-site practicums, traditional classroom modules, and online
courses.

M.A. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

This program provided an opportunity to thoroughly research academic material encompassing all aspects of the
International Politics of Asia, International Political Theory, and Security Studies. A research dissertation was completed in
2004 centering on Chinas relations with the United States, and the ramifications of Sino-American conflict for Taiwan. I picked
up a comprehensive understanding of how to research vast sources of research material, and received the wisdom that using
all available materials in teaching and studying is an important step in better understanding and communicating ideas. I also
taught undergraduate students the Security Studies program in 2004.

The degree program in politics and government was a life-changing experience. As an active member of the Faculty of Law and
Social Sciences at the university, I learned vital skills in student/lecturer facilitation and as an organizer of student outings, as
well as developing outstanding written and presentational abilities. Being leader of the Facultys student council, I had the
opportunity to build communication, teamwork, and leadership qualities that have stood me in good stead up to the present
day.

After leaving KCIS in June 2013, I headed off on adventures new, to the recently opened Burma. Moving from a big school
(3000 students) to a much smaller institution (200 students) has presented its usual coterie of challenges. I have developed
very close relations with my students, and have learned a tremendous amount about education from both them and a highly

experienced staff body. Indeed, one of the great advantages of a teaching position in a smaller school is ones greater every-day
exposure to all staff and students on the campus. On another note, as powerpoints and smartboards have had to take their
time on the backburner (the slow Internet speeds here do not facilitate these), I have been able to experiment with alternative
teaching methods. I have brought back into play a somewhat teacher-centric method of learning that has proved to be
successful. Having an innate ability to connect and communicate has always helped me to perform effectively at the front of
the class, where and when it is needed. My passion for the subject and humor also assist heavily in lending my teaching a
presence that students appreciate. Indeed, this is a realm of my teaching that has, in my opinion, been greatly improved during
my time with Yangon Academy. That said, I have never dispensed with constructivist education. I believe wholeheartedly in
student-centric learning and have enjoyed developing practice of this in Yangon. During my stay at Yangon Academy, I have
developed excellent relations with my principal and director of school, as well as with my administration, who have been a
constant source of encouragement and support. Finally, my decision to leave Yangon reflects a desire to head to different
global destinations to experience new educational challenges.

KANG CHIAO INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, TAIPEI CITY, TAIWAN (REPUBLIC OF CHINA)
POSITION HELD: TEACHER OF JUNIOR AND SENIOR STUDENTS OF SOCIAL STUDIES, SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

With responsibilities for grade 9 and grade 11 world and American history courses respectively, I had the opportunity during
this year to work with a truly wonderful department and with an incredibly dedicated and talented group of professionals. I
have also had the opportunity to hone my skills as a differentiated instructor, as well as having time to develop a series of
extremely fun and useful classroom activities that my students have enjoyed as well as having their interest in historical
themes, concepts, and issues piqued. The use of technology in classroom environments is also highly encouraged at Kang
Chiao, and the incorporation of smartboards and Internet learning is a corollary of this philosophy. The ability to use
webquests, 2.0 applications, smartboard gaming, lecturing tools such as Prezi, and poster applications such as Glogster, makes
for a highly enriched learning environment and much higher student participation levels in lectures. Finally, the diversity of
student nationalities, learning abilities, and English language levels always kept me on my toes in terms of being able to think
on my feet and to adapt lesson plans quickly if necessary. The decision to leave both the school and Taiwan was not because
things were going badly at KCIS; my time was up in Taiwan as I had resided there for eight years, and wanted a change of
international environment.

WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL, TAICHUNG COUNTY, TAIWAN (REPUBLIC OF CHINA)
POSITION HELD: SENIOR TEACHER AND HEAD OF SOCIAL STUDIES, OVERSEAS DEPARTMENT

As teacher and head of social studies for a reasonably prolonged period of time at Washington High School, I have had the
opportunity to develop and showcase my professional skills as an educator. Responsible for teaching all levels of student from
grades 7 to 12, I have built respect among students and teachers alike for my hands-on style of teaching syllabi in both Ancient
and Modern World History. As a nascent project in 2007, the Overseas Department was ripe for rigorous development; I
found myself in the very fortunate position of being able to offer my input into how the social studies program would develop
into a nationally and internationally recognized academic program. Starting almost from scratch is never an easy process;
however, I enjoyed embracing the responsibility of helping develop a curriculum that would fuse my own desire for high
academic standards with the schools ambitious plans for improved access to Western higher education for all of its students.
During the past four years, I have also led teams of grade 9 to 12 students to Model United Nations conferences in Taipei City,
have written numerous academic references that have contributed to many students gaining places at good Western academic
institutions, and have been instrumental in ramping up the belief and confidence in both junior and senior students to learn
and analyze academic material above their given levels. The hard work I have put in (fourteen-hour days have been common)
has seen its reward in the development of so many students into genuine Top 20 American college candidates. I am intensely
proud of my time in this department.
