Binge Drinking Awareness Questions:

1.) What is binge drinking?


Binge drinking is when you drink a lot of alcohol quickly, or have a lot of alcohol
on one occasion.

2.) Why are young people at risk when they binge drink?
Young people are less familiar with the effects of alcohol, and are more likely to
do something impulsive or dangerous.

3.) What percentage of Canadians aged 15 to 19, binge drink 12 or more times
in the past year?
Thirty percent of Canadians of this age group, binge drink at least twelve or so
times in the past year.

4.) How long does it take for your body to process 1 standard drink of
alcohol?
For one standard drink of alcohol, it takes your body an hour to process it.

5.) Give 3 examples of what a standard drink is.
12 oz. of beer (5% alcohol)
1.5 oz. of liquor (40% alcohol)
5 oz. wine (10-12% alcohol)

6.) What happens when you binge drink?
When you binge drink, you get intoxicated, or drunk. This is because you drink
faster than your body can eliminate the alcohol.

7.) List 3 risks of binge drinking.
Ones more likely to see suicide as a way out when theyre feeling down.
Theres a high risk of getting sick and possibly dying from alcohol
poisoning.
Over a longer term, repeated binge drinking can also increase the risk of
becoming an alcoholic or worse, developing cancer.

8.) List the 6 signs of alcohol poisoning.
Signs include:
disorientation or confusion
passing out, not being able to be woken up
slow, irregular breathing
bluish or pale, cold, clammy skin
slowed heart rate
vomiting while passed out.

9.) Explain what to do if someone is passed out from alcohol.
Gently roll the person on his or her side, tilting the head back and tucking the
top hand under the chin to keep the mouth open and the airway clear. This
helps to reduce the risk of choking if the person vomits. Bend the persons top
leg and bottom arm to support this position.
Do not leave the person alone
Call 911 if you cannot wake the person, especially if he or she is vomiting or
has vomited.

10.) List 3 ways you can be safer if you chose to drink.

Plan ahead. Arrange to walk, take a taxi or public transit home with a sober
buddy; get someone you can trust to pick you up; or stay overnight where you
will be drinking.
Drink slowly. Dont chug. No one will be impressed by how fast you can drink
when youre clinging to the toilet.
Pace yourself by alternating alcoholic drinks with soft drinks or water. Eat
before you drink and while you are drinking because this will help absorb the
alcohol.
