LSJ 322: Human Rights in Latin America
Overview of human rights issues and their recent evolution in Latin American history; military dictatorships; contemporary challenges in the regions democracies. Human rights concerns in relation to broader sociopolitical context. Recommended: knowledge of modern Latin American history. Offered: jointly with SIS 322.
I want to take this class because I would love to go to Ecuador this summer, and I want to know about some of the political and ethical issues going on in the area. I think that having a background of what is going on in Latin America would make the trip much more meaningful and would make it easier to understand the people who live there.
COM 201: Introduction to Communication I
Introduces students to four core principles that undergird the study and practice of communication -- communication literacy, research inquiry, theories and concepts, and community engagement. Principles discussed and developed in the context of international communication, political communication, and communication technology and society.
In high school, I was really involved in theatre and drama. I think that this passion of mine could translate to communications, and although in this worksheet communications is not my major, I think that it could be my major if I took it and enjoyed it. I would like to take communications soon, so that I can plan out my four year plan should it change.
POL S 353: United States Congress
Organization and procedure of Congress, state legislative politics, lobbying, legislative roles, theory and practice of representative government.
This class is like a mock Congress, where everybody acts out a part. I want to take this class partially because I think it will be fun, but also because I think it will teach me a lot about the different kinds of argument and different ways to be effective in speech. I also think it is an interesting and unique way to learn about the inner workings of Congress, and it would help me to learn the principles better.
