# Chapter 3 Summary

## Distributive property: Multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying

each added by the same number and adding the two products together.
Associative property of addition/multiplication: Changing the grouping of
addends or factors does not change the sum or product.
Commutative property of addition/multiplication: changing the order of
addends or factors does not change the sum or product.

To simplify the expression 4(7x 3) + 2x, you would first start with using
distributive property and multiplying 4 x (7x) then 4 x 3. Then if you re-write the
equation it would be 28x 21 + 2x. Once you have equation you will start by
combing like terms 28x + 2x (it also helps to put shapes around the like terms so
you can identify them quicker) When you combine this like terms it will be 30x ad
then bring down + 2x. So the final product will be 30x + 2x, and it is simplified.

The first step in solving 7x 10 9x = -13 you must combine like terms. 9x 9x
would cancel each other out, then 9x 7x and it would be -2x. After combining
like terms you would re-write the sentence -2x 10 = -13. Then you would solve
this like a two-step equation. You first start adding 10 two both sides 10 10
cancels each other out then -13 10 = -23. -2x = -23 now youre solving this
equation one step. Since it is -2 X you would divide -2 / -23. X = 11.5

To solve 5x/6 + x/3 =11/6 you will need to use multiplication. You would find
the common denominator for each fraction, and for this equation it would be 6.
So you would start out with 6 goes into 6, 1 time then 1 times 5x equals 5x. You
would do the same to the next 3 fractions. Once you have done same thing to the
next three, the equation should look like 5x + 2x 3 = 11. Now you would first
start out with adding 3 to 3 and it cancels each other out then 11 + 3 = 14. 5x +
2x =14. 5x + 2x = 7x then re-write the problem . 7x = 14. 7/7 cancels each other
out then 14/7 equals 2. Now x equals 2.

V.
To solve and graph 2 < x you would first start out with multiplying -5 by 2 which
-5
would be -10. Then once you have written out the equation it would look like
-10 > x. I have switched the sign because in an equation like this with a negative
has to be switched because it makes more sense with a negative. To graph this
equation it would be a filled in dot because it is greater than or equal to, and the
arrow would be going to the left.

VI.
To solve and graph -4x + 4 > -8 you would first start out with subtracting 4 by 4
which is canceling each other out, then you subtract 4 by -8 which is -12. Then
re-write the equation -4x < -12. Then -4 divided by -4 cancels each other out and
-4 divided by -12 is 3. 3 < x. To graph this equation it would be a filled in circle
because it is a greater than or equal to, and the arrow would be going right.

VII.
When you are graphing inequalities a closed in dot means that it is greater than
or equal to, and a non-closed circle means that it is just greater than or that it is
just less than.
