at annual showcase

BY MIKE SACKETT Daily Light correspondent
Waxahachies Civic center was filled with heros
of all ages Thursday evening. The event was the
school district's annual showcase. This years
celebration was titled Celebration 2014:
Waxahachie Heroes.
The celebration showcased to the community,
each of the district's schools and many of the
classes in those schools. Each of the display
projects were the results of the studies of the
student throughout the school year.
The themes of each school encompassed
either science, technology or history. There
were also several interactive games and crafts. As the students and their parents made their way
through the exhibits, they had a chance to design and make their own hero capes to wear.
Im impressed with the various projects each campus has put together. The staff has done an
outstanding job in raising the bar of expectations and achievements in all areas, Superintendent
Jeremy Glenn said.
Texas heroes was the theme of the fourth grade students of Northside Elementary.
Each student chose a person who is a hero to them. It could be an athlete, a movie actor,
musician and a person from the states history, fourth grade teacher Everett Johnson said.
After the student chose their hero, they researched them, collected pictures and put together a
small book about their hero. Each book contained a biography of the author.
In another area, Felty students shared their knowledge learned about plants and food sources.
This was one of the interactive booths where the guests learned and took a cup home with a
seed they had planted.
Teachers and students held an academic scavenger hunt that would throughout their booth. At
one of the stopping points, students learned about water volume placing rock in a bowl of water
to see how the level gets closer to the top.
Paperless term papers were the theme of the High Schools sophomore English class. Using a
Google application, the students set up their own folder to collect their research information and
write their papers online.

This is a great tool, besides being green friendly and saving paper, the teachers and the
students share access to the student's folders. This allows the teachers to monitor the progress
and share critiques with the students as they work through their theme, Librarian Megan Mills
said.
The online, paperless themes allowed the students to work on a variety of electronic mediums.
They were able to come in the library and use the school's computers, use their own laptops,
notebooks or even work on their smart phones, Mills said.
One of the more popular displays were the robots from the robotics team at Global High School.
Several members of the team drove their remote control robot cars through the crowds showing
the versatility of the small robots during the evening.
At the Global High booth, three members of the robot team displayed a crime prevention robot
made for the Waxahachie police Department.
We went to the department and asked if there was an interest and what the design criteria
would be. We wanted to build a robot that could be used in a crisis situation that would not put
an officer's life in harm's way, team member Darrell Rasco said.
Joined by Chris Reddy and Hayley Maynard, the trio set out to design and build the robot
complete with remote controlled cameras.
Later in the evening, the robotics team put on a demonstration on the performance stage of the
capabilities of some of the robots. The main attraction was a remote controlled beach ball-
throwing robot.
While the various schools and classes were entertaining their guests with games and activities,
many of the district's music, dance and theater groups performed on the civic center's stage.
Glenn summarized the celebration saying, Im so proud of the hard work our teachers and
students have put in every day to make this the huge success that this celebration has become.
