Annas Illnesses

Illnesses Effect on System (if applicable)

Diabetes Sickle Cell
Anemia
Heart Disease Urinary Tract
Infection
Cardiovascular

Hypertension-
Because the
blood is
hypertonic,
excessive
water remains
in the blood
vessel, causing
an increase in
blood pressure.

PAD- High
blood sugar
makes the
artery thinner
resulting in
reduced
amount of
blood flow to
the limbs.

Stroke-
Increased
blood pressure
forms a blood
clot in the
brain.
Sickle cell
crisis- Poor
blood flow
causes
extreme pain
and also
respiratory
distress.

Pulmonary
hyperteinsio
n- develops
when
pressure in
the arteriesof
the lungs
increases
causing
embolism.

Stroke
Hypercholesterolemia
- Stenosis or
occlusion of blood
vessels because of
the accumuloation of
cholesterol.

Tachycardic-
Average resting heart
rate is higher than
average due to
inefficient pumping of
heart.

Peripheral vascular
disease- Poor
circulation prevents
from sufficient
nutrient supply to
peripheral organs.

Heart murmur- Since
the valve doesnt
close properly, the
heart doesnt create a
normal lub-dub
sound.

PVC- Incomplete
contraction of
ventricles causes
malfunction of heart.
Sepsis-
Uncontrolled
innune system
can cause
increased
heart beat and
enlargement
of vessels and
arteries.
Digestive

Gastroparesis-
High glucose
level damages
the vagus
nerve and
unables normal
constriction.
Bilirubin
gallstones -
sickle cells
die in 20
days; liver
breaks down
the bilirubin;
extra
bilirubin can
become a
gallstone in
Absorption may be
delayed due to the
poor circulation,
eventually causing
upset stomachor any
other symptoms.
Septic shock-
Sepsis may
cause the
whole body
organs to
malfunction.

(bilirubin
forms bile)
Immune

Too high blood
glucose level
affects the
immune
system making
it vulnerableto
risk of
contracting
other disease
Poor blood
flow results
in increased
amount of
infection,
thus the
number of
the white
blood cells
increase
Poor circulation
makes it harder for
immune cells to move
to a certain location,
resulting in weakened
immunue system.
Increased
production of
lymphocytes
(B & T cells)
and
antibodies
against the
bacteria;
Inflammatory
response
(may increase
additional UTI
and/or
damage to
urinary tract
structures.
Nervous

Neuropathy-
Excess blood
sugar damages
blood vessels
and neurons.
Due to lack
of sufficient
oxygen
supply,
nervous
system
gradually
gets
destroyed,
such as
blindness.
Because the oxygen
supply is inefficient,
peripheral nervous
system gets
damaged.
Overreaction
of immune
system can
damage the
nervous
system.
Respiratory

Kussmaul
breathing-
rapid or
labored
breathing due
to lack of
glucose in the
cells.

DKA

Acute chest
syndrome-
Blood clot
causes
deprivation
of oxygen
from the
lung.

Pulmonary
hypertension
Poor oxygen supply
results in higher rate
of respiration, so that
you can increase the
amount of oxygen in
the blood.
Sepsis may
cause
increased
breathing and
heavy
respiration.
Urinary

Kidney
Disease-
Kidneys
overwork
because of the
excessive
amount of
Priapism-
For male
with sickle
cell,blocked
blood vessel
causes
painful long-
Damgage of the
nervous system
indirectly results in an
abnormal urination.
Hypercholesteroemia
may cause colored
fluid excreted from
Constant pain
in the urinary
tract due to
the infectious
agent.

blood.

DKA- Cells
metabolize fat
instead of
glucose
resulting in
accumulation
of ketones in
urine.

Glucose

urine.
