Lesson Title: Australian values in texts TWTWB lesson 1 of 2 TOPIC We are Australians English in citizenship, community and cultural identity TIME 11:30 12:45 1hr 15min INTRODUCTION LESSON RESOURCES Today we are continuing to learn about how Australia and Australians are represented in texts, using TWTWB as an example. Film: Tomorrow, when the war began (2010, directed by Tom Hooper) 5 A3 sheets of paper LESSON LEARNING OBJECTIVE To be able to identify Australian values in the characters and features of the film TWTWB. TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES 1. Mark roll and Australian Values Close Passage (10mins) 2. 11:40 Personal reflection: 15 minutes writing (20mins) Students to write a personal review for TWTWB, and about the values YOU consider most important for Australians (prompt: question 2 of assessment task) Must include: Heading Tomorrow when the war began review and date, learning objective - What you liked about the film - What you didnt like - Australian values depicted in the film pick from mateship, diversity, peacefulness, easy-going nature, toughness - Do you think this film offers an accurate representation of Australian culture and people? Why? 3. 12:00 Value breakdown (20 mins) Tables are given an A3 piece of paper with one of these values written on it: mateship, diversity, peacefulness, easy-going nature, toughness. Nominate a scribe. Each person at the table must write/contribute: 1. Which characters show this value in the movie? 2. What features of the character show this? 3. A quote from the character that relates. 4. A description of a scene where this value is evident(ly) demonstrated or violated. 4. 12:20 Character profiles. (20mins) constructed in groups, shared with class Heading: Character profiles Name, Physical Description, Personality Traits, 2 values they embody AND explain why/how, 1 quote from the character CLOSURE 12:40 Group reflection as groups quickly come up with a statement summary on what you have learned today; share before you go.
