TRIANGLE CENTERS

CONSTRUCTIONS
Day 2
OBJECTIVE
Students will be able to complete the basics steps of geometric constructions
and know how to properly use a compass and straightedge.
STANDARDS
Common Core Geometry: Congruence
Make geometric constructions.
12. Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass
and straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software,
etc.). Copying a segment; copying an angle; bisecting a segment; bisecting an angle;
constructing perpendicular lines, including the perpendicular bisector of a line segment;
and constructing a line parallel to a given line through a point not on the line.

ISTE Technology Standards:
1. Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative
products and processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
2. Communication and Collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively,
including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of
others.
a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of
digital environments and media
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety
of media and formats
PREPARATION
The teacher should become familiar with sound effect websites such as
FreeSound.org. Students will be divided into groups. Each group will need access to an
iPad or class computer.
Students should also be prepared to bring a compass and straightedge to class.
These materials should have known at the beginning of the yeah that these tools will be
necessary.
GUIDED INSTRUCTION STUDENT WORK
Teach students how to properly use tools
such as a compass and straightedge.
Begin with basic steps of geometric

constructions including drawing line
segments and arcs.
Divide students into groups of 4. This
can be done by proximity. Provide each
group with one iPad to share.
To help students remember various
steps to constructions, students should
create hand movements associated with
different drawings. For example drawing
an arc with in the air to associate with
drawing arcs.
Help students find free to use sound
effects using a website such as
Freesound.org.
Use sound effects to associate with arcs,
lines, perpendicular lines and angles.
The sound effects should also
correspond to the hand movements
students created.

Students will move into groups of four
keeping their materials for practicing
constructions.
Students will create hand movements
within their groups.

Students will find sound effects to
associate with their hand movements.

Students will continue to find sound
effects in groups of 4 to associate with
constructions. Students will practice
describing constructions through hand
motions and sound effects.

STUDENT PRODUCTS
Students will practice making constructions at home by completing the worksheet
found below.
Students will turn in the hard copy the following day but will also scan or take a
photograph of their work and post it to their Pinterest.
