ALGEBRA CONNECTION AND PROOFS

Day 8
Objective
Students will work in groups to learn and apply the Angle Bisector Theorem in
proofs using algebra. Students will then create their own problems using the
Angle Bisector Theorem.
Standards
Common Core Content Standards:

Geometry: Congruence
10. Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: measures of interior angles of a
triangle sum to 180; base angles of isosceles triangles are congruent; the segment
joining midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half the
length; the medians of a triangle meet at a point; the altitudes of a triangle meet at a
point.

ISTE Technology Standards

2. Communication and Collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively,
including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of
others.
a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of
digital environments and media
5. Digital Citizenship
Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and
practice legal and ethical behavior.
b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration,
learning, and productivity
Teacher Preparation
Make sure to have enough iPads for each group of students. Preview searches
for angle bisectors and write down helpful websites and videos in case students have a
hard time finding the information on their own.
Guided Instruction Instruction Student Work
Provide students with coordinates of a
triangle and the following equation:

They will also write down notes
regarding the formula presented.

vertices of the triangle. A, B, and C are
the side lengths opposite the vertices
and P is equal to the perimeter.
This is the equation they will use to find
the incenter of the triangle. Review
elements of the equation with students.
Separate students into groups of 3,
either homogenously or by proximity to
one another.
Once the students have moved into their
groups they will use the coordinates and
the formula to find the incenter of the
triangle.
Remind students that they cannot use
constructions but can use the graph as a
visual aid to help them map out their
process.
Each group will be given one iPad to
share. Remind students that use of the
iPad is only for class purposes. Students
may also use their own devices as long as
is for class purposes. Walk around the
room to monitor iPad use. If students do
not use devices correctly take device
away.
Instruct students to look in their texts
books and online resources for
information about the Angle Bisector
Theorem.
Pass out the Angle Bisector worksheet
and allow students to complete the
worksheet in their groups.
During the final 10 minutes of class
review the Angle Bisector Theorem with
the entire class. Explain how the triangle
ratios should be set up and answer any
questions regarding proportions. Provide
examples to review with the class.
Explain homework.

Students should take this time to ask
questions.

Students will move into their groups
once everyone has graphed the triangle.

Students will use the formula to find the
incenter. They will have to find the
lengths of the triangle sides first before
using the formula.
Students will begin searching for
information on bisected angles. They can
use videos or websites that have
information. Students should cross
reference information to make sure they
have correct information.

Each group will have an iPad, but
students not using the iPad or device
should use textbooks to verify
information.

Students will research the angle bisector
theorem and write down notes.

Students will complete the worksheet in
their group and turn it in at the end of
class.
Students should answer how to properly
set up the ratios for the Angle Bisector
Theorem.
Each student will write an Angle Bisector
Problem and post it to their Pinterest
account. They must also solve two other
problems posted by another student.
Student Products
Students should have three posts completed by the next day. An original
problem using the Angle Bisector Theorem and two posts solving the problems
presented by the other class members.
