Shapes are everywhere at home, at school, and in our
community! Take a look at the objects around the classroom. What basic shapes do you see? What is the shape of the keyboard or computer screen? Think about your home. Which basic shapes make up the structure of your house? Is there a square at the base, a triangle for the roof, and a rectangle for the door or chimney? Essential Questions: How are shapes similar and different? What is a quadrilateral? TASK You will become an spy, searching for shapes and identifying their attributes like sides and angles. In addition, you will research the similarities and differences of triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons. At the end of this WebQuest, you will create a picture using at least four geometric shapes.
PROCESS 1. Watch The Polygon Movie Use your math journal to draw pictures of each shape Make notes about each shape: sides and angles
2. Discuss Find a friend to talk about what you learned Note at least 2 things your partner mentioned in your math journal PROCESS 3. Complete the IXL Shapes Quiz You may use your journal or a partner as a resource If you answer a question incorrectly, highlight the information in your math journal
4. Watch Shapes, Shapes Everywhere! Use this video to get ideas for your picture PROCESS 5. Use the pattern blocks in the math center to create a picture You must use at least 4 different shapes
6. Take a picture of your project with the digital camera Make sure the picture is CLEAR! Have a friend or Miss Getz look at the picture EXTENSION (EARLY FINISHERS) 7. Play the ABCya Shapes Game to get new ideas for a picture
8. Find a partner and use the Online Pattern Blocks to create a new shape picture
9. Take a screen capture of your online picture and paste it in a Microsoft Word document
10. If you have extra time, play Geometry Word-O-Rama Make notes of any new terms you learn CONCLUSION Congratulations! You are a shape specialist!
You should now be able to identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons classify and draw shapes distinguish angles on a shape
Use the ideas and links from this project to make more pattern block pictures in math centers! EVALUATION 1: Needs Improvement 2: Standards in Progress 3: Meets Standards Names Shapes Names 0-1 shape Names 2-3 shapes Names 4 or more shapes Identifies Sides Correctly indicates 0-1 shapes sides Correctly indicates 2-3 shapes sides Correctly indicates 4 or more shapes sides Identifies Angles Correctly indicates 0-1 shapes angles Correctly indicates 2-3 shapes angles Correctly indicates 4 or more shapes angles Creativity No thought of shape placement evident; little use of color Some thought of shape placement evident; some use of color Thoughtful placement of shapes to form picture; use of color Your picture will be displayed on the SmartBoard. When you present, you will name and point to the the shapes you used. In addition, you will identify the number of sides and angles in each shape. This rubric will be used to grade your picture.
