This cover letter is to express my interest in the multiple subject teaching position
available. Currently I am finishing my first year as a graduate student in the Teacher Education
Program at the University of California, Los Angeles. I will be receiving my multiple subject
credentials in July and would be grateful to have an opportunity to be a part of your school
team.
The emphasis in the Teacher Education Program at the University of California, Los
Angeles is social justice education. Throughout the year I focused on how social justice
education would look like in my classroom and how I can adapt these ideals to fit my personal
teaching style. After considerable thought and practice, I have come to the conclusion that
social justice education in my classroom will entail having high expectations of all students and
creating opportunities for students to have equal access to the curriculum depending on their
current level of understanding. This will be accomplished through differentiated instruction
where students at different levels can receive information at their level but still being taught
grade level curriculum that corresponds to Common Core standards. Common Core standards
requires students to think critically and have a deep understanding of their own thought
process which students will be able to practice in my classroom by constantly asking and
answering the question why? Why do I think this? Why does this happen? Why did I solve the
problem this way? Why did my partner solve this problem in a different way? Through
collaboration, students will be given opportunities to discuss their perspective while critically
analyzing other students work and methods. All of this will be done in a classroom community
that can be described as nurturing, respectful, supportive, relevant, and engaging on the sides
of both the teacher and the students.
