Trineen Lopes Lacaden

With differentiation for grades K-12

Define: Mosaic
- something made up of different things that together form a
pattern or picture
- a decoration on a surface made by pressing small pieces of
colored glass or stone into a soft material that then hardens to
make pictures or patterns
Creates modern Mosaics from raw hand-cut materials, like bicycle gears,
river stones and ceramics.es.
Today, the world can appear
fragmented and its people
disconnected. Mosaics allow me to
fuse the pieces together to create
something cohesive and beautiful,
what I wish the world could be.
-Laura Harris
"Its a shame to
throw them
away, but you
cannot use them
either." - Vadim
Zaritsky
Mosaic is hard. Art
is harder

Quotes from mosaic Artists
Digital Mosaics & a pixelated comeback
Technology &
Mosaic Art
Pixel: any of the small discrete elements
that together constitute an image (as on a
television or computer screen)
Resolution the ability of a device to show an image clearly and with a lot of detail

Guiding Questions:
From the Mosaics you have seen so far, (both created and
digital versions) explain what a mosaic is in your own
words
Why might someone choose to do a mosaic instead of a
painting, sketch, or photograph?
What does a mosaic form of art convey that may be
overlooked a first glance?
What can you do with mosaic art that you can not do with a
pencil, pen, or paintbrush?
Does this form of art have a different effect on you as a
viewer?
What about depth and dimension? Do you think the artist
uses these concepts in creating a mosaic?
For the younger ones.
What do you notice about the pictures?
Are they different from the posters in our
classroom, how?
If we look at them from far away, do they
look different than if we look at them up
close?
Production Experiences:
K-2nd: COLOR BY NUMBER
Students are exploring colors
and shapes. Students at this
age are usually familiar with
color by number worksheets.
Instead of coloring, have
students use recycled
construction paper to compile a
mosaic in a color by number
template. Students work can
later be glued together to create
a mural size picture.
Talk about the importance of
working together and parts of a
whole.
3rd-5th: Materials & Meaning
Students are exploring concepts
of self and environment. Have
students work in groups and
give them a concept and
materials to convey a message
in their mosaic.
Example: One group will receive
different types of paper (tissue
paper, brown bag, construction
paper) They will be asked to
create a mosaic with a message
about the use, origin, or result of
paper in our society.
*Assistance with a template/ pre
made templates may be
necessary.
6th & Up: Art In The Real World
Art is about expression! Hidden in
art are concepts, emotions, and
feelings about the world around us.
Inspired by the popular quote A
picture is worth a thousand words.
Your task is to create an artistic
mosaic using whatever materials
you choose. You must also
construct a 2pt. paper to explain
your work. Part 1, explaining the
message behind your art and Pt. 2,
persuading a company or customer
to purchase it. You can do a logo,
an abstract representation, a
metaphoric picture, or an original
art piece.
Talk about the purpose and value
of art.
Concepts & Major Ideas
Creating Mosaics teaches
-Attention to detail
-Use of colors and hues (value)
-Critical thinking
-Construction and
deconstruction
-The importance of the parts of
a whole
-Resolution
-Use of diverse materials
-Patience
When you look at art, you are allowed to admire and
analyze it. When you create art, you are asked to
understand it.
Creating a mosaic allows you to think about all the
details that make up an art piece. This is a very intricate
and advanced stage of art. Every element of design is
incorporated. Every block, every piece, every pixel, is
chosen by the artist. What can be done in a simple
stroke of paint, may take an hour to examine at this
scale.
Visual Arts Unit Plan Idea:
CD MOSAIC:
Involve students of the Cognition center in creating
a collaborative mosaic from recycled C.D.s.
Create one of three separate pieces to decorate the
outside walls of our Cognition Center.
(Imagination, Science/tech, Culture)
Sustainability talk: Talk about the importance of
recycling, repurposing, and using e waste facilities.
Discuss the effects of electronic waste in our
landfills.
