Reflection after Goal Update: When thinking about what to include in my rubric, the first thing I thought of was to make sure that I truly grasped the significance of using backwards design. I could show that I used it in assignments and had it down on paper, but if I didnt have notes or reasons as to why it was an important technique to use, then I wouldnt consider my goal met. It is important to use backwards design, but also to show why it is important to use it. This relates to what weve learned in class about how important it is for students to explain their reasoning when they are doing mathematics. A student may be able to perform a rote task or formula, but if they cant explain the significance of it, they havent truly learned it. The next thing I thought of was that I show progress towards meeting my goal and that the progress is shown in a variety of ways. I think this is a crucial quality to include in the rubric because learning should not just occur in one area such as notes with a goal like this. Notes are great to include, but so are lesson plans, assignments, and reflections. I think the progress is shown more fully when it is shown across a variety of sources. We have learned that if something is learned and just spat back out, it is not truly absorbed. I feel that this component of the rubric shows that holistic learning and presenting material in a variety of ways is the best way for it to make a lasting impact. Lastly, I wanted to make sure that the portfolio was compiled in a thoughtful way and that it is explained in the reflection. I think it is important that resources arent just thrown together and called a SMART goal. A SMART goal should be thought out and put together over time in a purposeful way. I think it is important that the thought process is explained in the reflection and that it gives major insight into the whole goal process. This relates to what weve learned about mathematics instruction and making sure students have reasoning behind their work. If they are just guessing, or playing around until they get the right answer, then they arent really applying themselves to figure out the best and correct way to perform the task. Working on my SMART goal has helped me see why each of these components of the rubric is important. I could not have made this rubric before I worked on my goal. I may have been able to make a more general and basic rubric based on what I thought the project would be like, but after continually working on it, I have seen what is most important to my maintaining of my goal and what is most important to assess. Right now, I would give my portfolio a 4 for identifying the importance and benefits of using backwards design in planning because I feel that it something I have been seeking out constantly throughout the course and recording it when I find references that give insight into that. I have also identified those benefits through personal experience in my planning and have shown that in the way my lessons are made and in various reflections. I would give my portfolio a 3 for showing progress through a collection of resources and implementation because I do have a variety of resources, but I could include more detail in my notes and use various assignments to show my continued progress. I would give my portfolio a 3 for my reflection explaining how the portfolio is compiled and how that made progress towards my goal because I am still figuring out what is the best way to compile my portfolio. I have a variety of resources but I need to make sure that they are organized in a way that makes sense to me personally and clearly shows the progression of my goal. This is one thing I will definitely do to take my portfolio to a higher level before the end of the semester. I will also be including more detail in my various reading notes and in the assignments that I used backwards design for. As the assignments come to completion, I will be able to see the fruit of using backwards design throughout the planning process of a lesson and further articulate the impact that it has had on me and my planning during this semester.
