FREDERICK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT
Sights And Sounds Of The Northern Lights

FREDERICK, MDThe Frederick Symphony Orchestra will bring the Northern Lights to life
during their second-to-last concert of the 2014-2015. The concert will be held on Saturday, May
2, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at the J.B. Kussmaul Theater at Frederick Community College.
Northern Lights will feature music selections from Grieg and Sibelius, such as Holberg
Suite, Op. 40 and Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op.43, respectively. Pianist John Wickelgren
will be returning to perform with the Frederick Symphony Orchestra for the first time since
2011, and will be playing Greig: Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16. Several years ago,
Wickelgren was recognized and received an Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State
Arts Council, and used the funds to record his debut CD Reflections: The Year 1905.
Wickelgren is part of the music department of both Frederick Community College and Mount
St. Marys University. He received a D.M.A. degree in Piano Performance from the Peabody
Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, and he also holds two degrees from Oberlin College
and Oberlin Conservatory.

Barry Kolman will be featured as the guest conductor for this FSO performance. Kolman
is currently the Music Director and Conductor of the Shenandoah Symphony Orchestra. He has
published a book, The Language of Music Revealed, and recorded five CDs. Kolman has
conducted several orchestras across the country and around the world, including Madison
Symphony Orchestra of Virginia, Bemidji Symphony Orchestra of Minnesota, Buffalo
Philharmonic, and notably the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic in Russia.
Tickets for the 2014-2015 concert season are on sale now. $20, adults; $15, seniors, and
