I observed three diferent science experiments in class today!

The Non-Popping Balloon

How does it work?
Water is a great substance for soaking up heat. The thin balloon allows the
heat to pass through very quickly and warm the water. s the water closest
to the !ame heats up" it begins to rise and cooler water replaces it at the
bottom of the balloon. This cooler water then soaks up more heat and the
process repeats itself. In fact" the exchange of water happens so often that it
keeps the balloon from ever popping! The soot on the bottom of the balloon
is actually carbon. The carbon was deposited on the balloon by the !ame"
and the balloon remains undamaged.
What you can do at home:

#ow that you know water will prevent a balloon from popping" try other
liquids. Try performing the experiment with $uices" sodas" and more. Who
knows what will happen% &ne thing is for sure" you'll (nd out what
liquids are the best conductors of heat!

Egg in a Bottle
How does it work?
The burning piece of paper heats the molecules of air in the bottle and
causes the molecules to move far away from each other. .ome of the heated
molecules actually escape out past the egg that is resting on the mouth of
the bottle /that0s why the egg wiggles on top of the bottle1. When the !ame
goes out" the molecules of air in the bottle cool down and move closer
together. This is what scientists refer to as a partial vacuum. #ormally the air
outside the bottle would come rushing in to (ll the bottle" but the egg is in
the way! The 2push3 or pressure of the air molecules outside the bottle is so
great that it literally pushes the egg into the bottle.
What you can do at home:

*arefully push two or three small birthday candles into the narrower end
of a hardboiled egg. 4ake sure the candles can (t easily inside the large5
mouthed bottle. +ight the candles and sing a quick happy birthday song
to the egg. Turn the large5mouthed bottle upside5down and slowly put
the candles inside the mouth of the bottle. llow the !ames to heat up
the air inside the bottle for $ust a few seconds and then place the mouth
of the bottle against the egg. The candles will go out and with a 6pop!6
the egg will squee7e up into the bottle. To get the egg out of the bottle"
you will have to turn the bottle upside down and put your mouth on the
mouth of the bottle and forcefully blow air into the bottle. It shouldn't
take much! The egg will pop out of the bottle $ust like it popped into it!

The Screaming Balloon
How does it work?
The hex nut and coin circles inside the balloon due to centripetal force.
*entripetal force is the inward force on a body that causes it to move in a
circular path. It is a 6center5seeking6 force. hex nut has 9 sides" and these
!at edges cause the hex nut to bounce or vibrate inside the balloon. The
screaming sound is made by the sides of the hex nut vibrating against the
inside wall of the balloon.
What you can do at home:

Try changing the si7e of the balloon or the si7e of the hex nut" what
happens% &r try using a marble instead of a hex nut. :oes the marble
make the balloon 6scream%6 ;xperiment with other ob$ects whose edges
may vibrate against the balloon.
What you will need:

*lear balloons /<6 to ==6 balloons from a party store work great1

.ome =,>6 hex nuts from the hardware store

*oins /pennies" nickels" quarters1 or other ob$ects.
