Welcome!

Hello! Miss Simmons class. I have created this Webquest for you
to take a little journey through equivalent fractions.

Welcome 5th Graders

We have been looking at equivalent fractions these past two weeks. This webquest is a chance
for you to do some exploring and practicing with a partner.


Task
Standards for your unit: 4.NF.1, 4.NF.2
(Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n a)/(n b) by using visual fraction
models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two
fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent
fractions.)
(Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by
creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such
as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same
whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g.,
by using a visual fraction model.)

Part One

1. Read this review of equivalent fractions. This method is a little different then what we
have been doing. But I want you to see another way. You can use which ever method
works the best for you.

1. Play Equivalent Fraction Memory

Now to the tough part...


Part Three


1. You will need paper and a writing utensil, remember that you and your partner need to
work together on this.
2. Think of 5 different food items that can be split up to make different equivalent fractions
(example: pizza, cookies, and chocolate bar). For each item, you will create 3 different
equivalent fractions and draw representations of each one.
3. Turn this with you and your partners name on it to the MATH BIN.

Part Four

This is an individual part so return to your seat.
You will go to Socrative and complete the quiz. I would like you to work out and do the drawing model (on
a piece of paper) before answering.
