Single elimination tournaments eliminate losers after each round until one winner remains, based on powers of 2. Double elimination allows all contestants to play at least twice, with winners and losers brackets. Round robin has every player compete equally against each other in a set rotation, making it impractical for many entries unless ample time is available.

Single elimination tournaments are simple: losers are eliminated, winners
advance to the next round until there is only one contestant left. That contestant is the winner. Single elimination tournaments are based on the power of 2. If the number of contestants doesnt work for the draw then a bye will occur.
Double elimination, this type of tournament ensures that all contestants play at least two games. Losers of the first games go to the losers bracket and the teams who win go to the winners bracket. This is good because everyone plays at least two games.
Round Robin. In round robin tournaments, every player competes with every other player an equal number of times, determined by a set rotation. For this reason, it is not desirable for a large number of entries, unless you have plenty of time (a tournament with 32 entries would take 496 games to complete).
