Homework

The district has a policy of 30

minutes per night for third graders.
We will fill this time with Reading,
Math, Writing, and occasional
special projects.

Your child will have a homework
journal that will need to be signed
daily. Please look for this each
afternoon. Agendas are available for
sale in the front office if you prefer.
Journals are a great place to write a
quick note to ask me a question
about something or tell me about
something coming up in your
schedule. I read these each day.

To ensure that your child does his or
her best on their homework, please
help them create a distraction free
environment in which to work.
For example, avoid places that are
too noisy or too close to the
television. Set up a specific time for
them to do homework each day if at
all possible.

If you have concerns about your
childs homework being too hard or
too easy, please feel free to contact
me at school so that we can set up a
time to discuss this.
My name is Melissa Rea and I am
thrilled to be your childs third grade
teacher. I have been with the Clark
County School District for 18 years.
My teaching experience ranges
from 1
st
through 3
rd
grade, as well
as being a Librarian. This is my sixth
year at Goynes and I am very excited
to be part of such a great school. I
am married with a sixth and an eighth
grade daughter.

Welcome to
room 45,
Third Graders!

Third grade is an exciting year. We will
be reading a great deal of non-fiction
books and informational writing in
language arts, and we will begin to
learn cursive writing. In math, we will build
upon previously learned skills such as
addition and subtraction as well as
introduce multiplication, division, and other
advanced concepts. Feel free to come in to
look at the Common Core State Standards
if you would like further information on
the third grade curriculum. I will be
working closely with the Accelerated
Learning Team at Goynes to appropriately
pace learning activities to meet the needs
of the students in room 45. I am determined
to keep our classroom a challenging place
for everyone. I offer an open-door
classroom and parents or guardians are
more than welcome to come in anytime to
see what we are doing. I am also available
to parents or guardians for conferences if
you have any concerns. Please email me
to set up a time that fits us both.

Accelerated Learning
Classroom (ALC)
What is an Accelerated
Learning Classroom? Accelerated
classes offer the same curriculum and
standards that other grade level
classrooms offer, but the instruction
and assignments are intended to be
more challenging, faster paced, and
cover topics with greater depth.
What is the objective of
the Accelerated Learning
Classroom? The objective of the ALC
is to provide heightened learning
opportunities for students who exhibit
advanced learning skills. Students who
are placed in an ALC should be
expected to continue to progress
academically in the four core areas of
content (math, writing, reading,
science) as they prepare for the rigors
of middle school.
Will my child be assessed
differently in the ALC? In an ALC
the teacher and GATE specialist will
collaborate from time to time during
instruction and will also work as
partners to build instructional
systems, rubrics and assignments that
are meaningful and product oriented.
The teachers assigned to lead these
classes will monitor individual student
progress just as in any classroom at
Goynes ES so that the teacher can
respond quickly to the unique
instructional needs of the students
within the class.

Behavior

I believe that the most effective way to
have a well disciplined class is to teach
each child self responsibility. On the first
few days of school we will sit down as a
class and decide as a group what we
think our most important rules need to be.
We will also come up with consequences
at this time. Therefore, you will be
receiving a copy of our Classroom
Contract during the second week of school.
Please sign this and return it as soon as
you see it. Discuss it with your child and
be sure that they understand the rules
and the consequences that we have
decided on as a class. I will then return a
copy of the signed contract to you by the
end of the week. That way you have a
copy of it at home to go over if the need
arises.

In the past the contract has had logical
consequences: for example, a child who
plays in class rather than doing his/her
work has chosen the consequence of
finishing their work during center time
on Friday.

Some children may require more
feedback than others. If this is the case,
I will call you so that we can set up a daily
or weekly behavior program for your child.

Students will receive classroom money and
will be able to purchase items in our store
on Fridays. However, if they do not turn in
their homework or have good behavior, they
will lose this opportunity.
