PROJECT 3 - INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY PROJECT Modern students are highly visual learners; they are digital natives and have grown up with digital media. The learning is by immersion, doing, listening and watching. Students prefer classroom learning through participation, collaboration, exploration, critical reflection and feedback. They can be audio, visual and/or text based learners. Based on this information I have developed a lesson that is visually, engaging and multi-media, combining traditional techniques of drawing and applying these techniques to a digital medium. For my lesson Contour Cars, students will learn about contour drawing, alongside traditional practice, expanding their knowledge and skill level into digital media applications. Students will examine a large projected image of a toy car on the whiteboard as well as a 3-D model using techniques and the practice of contour drawing. The visual learners examine the contours of car(s) using different tools, media, and mediums. Students will participate and collaborate to do research on a category of car making, eco-friendly and write about it; visually understanding how to create an image combining text, graphics and drawing in an original, digital, contour-line drawing. There is one laptop computer for the classroom, a Toshiba Satellite L755; CPU, Intel Pentium Processor B960 @ 2.20 gigahertz, a hard drive with 500GB memory and installed RAM 4.0 gigabytes, system type is 64-bit, and operating system is Microsoft Windows 7 with Microsoft Office 2010. The laptop will be used to introduce and demonstrate new knowledge and skills on Day 1. During introduction, the laptop will be used to show students information from my webpage and a data projector will project large to the whiteboard. For the demonstration of contour drawing skills and exercises, a document camera allows range of view, students do not have to get up and crowd around one table to see. For group centers on Day1 a projected image of a 3-D toy car will remain on WB. I am speculating there is a computer lab in the school. For group and hands on instruction a computer lab will be used for Day 2 and 3. Further thinking, there are 30 laptop computers, Levono G580s, CPU, Intel Core i5-3210M, Processor speed 2.5 GHz, Windows 8, RAM 4 GB, Hard drive 500 GB. All laptops are set up along the outside walls, so the teacher can stand anywhere in the room and see every screen. A projector and four ink jet printers are in on an island in the center of the room. The screen for the projector is at the end of the room. Each laptop has a plug in port for a mouse and headphones. Every laptop has internet access and runs Microsoft Windows 8, with Microsoft Office 2010, MS Paint. Paint is a drawing tool that can be used for simple drawings and basic image editing. On Day 2, students will work together in groups of 2-4, to research and work on an Internet Scavenger Hunt (see handout below). On Day 3, I will show a brief video tutorial to the class on MS Paint. I will also provide written instructions on MS Paint; these instructions will be posted during the entire class using the laptop and data projector. Students will work individually in MS Paint to produce a digital contour line drawing using the image they have researched and written about on Day 2. Students will save their work in digital portfolios (ppt.) and post their work to a classroom blog with at least one shared comment about the work of another student. Students will also print out one copy of their digital image on paper. Day 4 is for group critique. Using the classroom laptop with data projector students will present their work from the blog posting along with exercises on paper using the document camera. I will assess throughout the lesson using the rubric below, looking at the students work, documenting student participation and production components. See Lesson plan, Scavenger Hunt, Rubrics and Grading Scale Below

Lesson Title: Contour Cars
Focus with Question: This lesson will be focused on introducing the technique of contour drawing. No value will be added to these drawings. Students will first practice with the technique culminating in a project designed to integrate technology, photography, drawing and text. The lesson also includes art historical content, looking at Henri Matisse, as well as, 21 st century car design students. What method, media and material was most beneficial, to produce a contour drawing, and why?
Learning Objectives: TSW be able to increase their perceptual knowledge of objects through drawing, specifically the inside and outside edges of objects-contours. TSW be able to use different medias and mediums to create original artwork. TSW be able to research a category in car making, such as, eco-friendly and write about it. TSW be able to create an image combining text, graphics and drawing to create an original, digital contour-line drawing.
State Goals: VA.4.S.3.1 Skills, Techniques, and Processes Experiment with various materials, tools, techniques, and processes to achieve a variety of results in two- and/or three-dimensional artworks. VA.4.S.3.3 Skills, Techniques, and Processes Follow procedures for using tools, media, techniques, and processes safely and responsibly. VA.4.C.1.2 Critical Thinking and Reflection Describe observations and apply prior knowledge to interpret visual information and reflect on works of art. VA.4.O.2.1 Organizational Structure Use a variety of resources and art skills to overcome visual challenges in personal artworks.
Instructions: specific steps for the instructor to follow and specific strategies for integrating technology This is a 4 day lesson. Class periods are 50 min. Day 1: Introduction (10 min). I will use the computer for classroom presentations and demonstrations, a laptop, data projector and whiteboard to show my webpages on Contour Cars; introducing Matisse and contour drawing using text and graphics. Demonstrating contour drawing, I will use a laptop computer along with a data projector, document camera and WB to project a large image of a toy car. After demo, the contour drawing is done together as a whole class. Students will then participate in group, timed activities using the projected image of a toy car and 3-D models, moving around the room to different stations practicing contour drawing techniques. Instructions will be printed at each center.
Transition time between stations should be 2-3 minutes. Drawing Exercises 1.) TSW will look at the projected image for a contour drawing in pencil on paper: Outline of the object and interior parts of the object, showing the object without any shading. Look for details (5-6 Min). 2.) At this center, TSW look at the projected image for a blind contour drawing. Students will have paper plates over their pencils while they study the projected image and draw on paper, students will have to coordinate eye and hand movement using a continuous line drawing technique where the pencil stays on the paper from the beginning of the drawing to the end. (5-6 min) 3.) At this center, TSW look at a 3-D models of a car and do a modified contour line drawing; in between the blind contour and contour; looking at the image and memorize, look down and draw, stop, look up and memorize, etc, using marker. (5-6 min) 4.) Like Matisse TSW do a contour drawing of a still life, flower and vase, using marker. (Choice of blind, modified, continuous line contour or combination of all (5-6 min) 5.) Clean-up 5 min. Day 2- Research Day- Computer lab-To get students going will show car designer video from my Web page Contour Cars. The goal is to have students get an idea of what artistic learning can lead to: a real-world application, a job. I will also go over instructions to complete scavenger hunt worksheet. Students will be put into groups of 2-4. Peer learning- some students have prior background knowledge in internet research and some may not. With show of hands students will be grouped accordingly. (8min) Students will use reference materials and digital resources from the Web. I have a curriculum resource page/ Scavenger hunt worksheet for students to fill out as they research cars. (See below) The class time is spent on students doing research sharing information, finding appropriate photographic images, save the image in their digital folders and write about the car they have chosen, three sentences minimum, in the first person. Day 3-Production Day- Computer Lab- Introduce MS Paint with brief video. I will utilize MS Paint software and demonstrate its use in the classroom (laptop, data projector, WB). Written directions will be projected throughout class time. Students will learn how to produce a digital contour line drawing on top of the car image they have chosen, add written text from their worksheet (previous day), sign their work in a text box, post image to blog with one written comment and print one copy. I will demonstrate step-by step and be available for questions /assistance. Day 4- Presentation/Participation, Group Critique: One computer is used for students to present assignments, projects, and research activities to the entire class. Class period is for group discussion and critique. Students will reflect on the work and the lesson through presentation of digital contour car drawing, blog post using laptop and data projector along with works on paper using a document camera. Topics of discussion: Students can self-reflect and find what method, media and material was most beneficial, to produce a contour drawing, and why. Students can also talk about the car they wrote about. Printed images from the computer lab will be displayed in school. Evaluation of content: summary of how the student will be graded A rubric will be used that students can understand. Students will also be evaluated using the scavenger hunt worksheet. Students will be evaluated from participating in group critique, discussing contour line drawings, in various media. The rubric will have points assigned that relate to the learning objectives, participation and completion of exercises. The learners will be required to document, reflect and positively critique their work and the work of others in the class.
Evaluation of curriculum and technology integration: summary of how the instructor will determine if the technology enhanced the curriculum The teacher observes during the exercises, research and production analyzing students engagement with different media. A teacher created rubric will determine the quality of work. The teacher will evaluate and compare between 2-D and 3-D visuals for exercises which produces the best results. Proper use of internet with digital media skills to a finished artwork will determine students applied knowledge.
