BeforeoutlininghowtheHomericidealizationofselfhoodfindslifeinTheOdysseyand
livesoninmodernitystotalizingassertionsofselfhood,AdornoandHorkheimerfirstrevisittheir
historicalcritiqueofEuropeanenlightenmentinthepreviouschapter,andtheconceptsderivation
frommyth.ThisisinordertoplaceTheOdysseywithinatemporalframeworkofmaterial
conditionsdevelopinginconjunctionwiththesubordinationoftheunknowninthepursuitofthe
sovereignindividual.However,aconceptionofhistoryisnotusedtopinpointexplicitoriginor
concreteprocess.Rather,AdornoandHorkheimerfindinEuropeanenlightenment,themost
