Quote:
A man may imagine things that are false, but he can only understand things that are true, for if the
things be false, the apprehension of them is not understanding. Isaac Newton
Summary:
We can think and imagine answers for everything we know, but until we actually know the truth can
we fully understand things.
This quote bring to mind all the silly answers I thought were right to different questions I had or
things I thought I knew. One of them was that the earths wobble happened in a year and that was
where we got the seasons until my father told me the correct reason for it and it took longer than I
thought for the earths wobble.

Entry #2 - Connection to Astronomy

Source: A Night at the Opera, 21 Nov. 1975 Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
Summary: In the song, I believe they are talking about a man on deaths row about to be
executed but does not want to die, and thinks he was unfairly prosecuted.
Discussion: Galileos is referenced in this song for the fact that he was unfairly persecuted by the
church and put on house arrest for the remainder of his life and through his name is the
connection to astronomy.

Summary: Scientists have found an extra solar planet that they are saying is a super earth the planets
technical name is GJ 832, it is 5 times bigger than the sun and receives the same amount of solar energy
as we do and orbits a read sun in 16 days.

Discussion: I found this article intriguing for the fact that we are discovering more and more planets out
there and I cant wait until we do find one. Plus they have a red sun (maybe its krypton?)

ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 16 March 2014.

Summary: in the article it talk about mercurys satellite messenger has sent us pictures of rift
forming on the surface and think that it is due to mercury cooling and since it has one solid
tectonic plate is shriveling and forming these ridges.
Discussion: I find it interesting that Mercury only has one tectonic plate. The fact that it is
cooling, and forming these ridges, the planet is like a grape drying up. This fact might also mean
that the sun may be cooling down as well.

before." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 15 May 2014.
Summary: That Jupiters Giant red spot wont be giant anymore. The article talks about the
red spot/ storm is slowly shrinking and will probably continue to do so and might even
disappear. They say the spot is shrinking by 580 miles per year. (sd)
Discussion: I found this interesting yet sad that it might disappear and future generations wont
be able to see it.

Summary: Scientist believe that Saturn moon titan may have nitrogen properties such as meteors found
in the Oort cloud, as soon as the ESAs Rosetta mission arrives in the keeper belt so they can study the
compositions and chemicals of asteroids in the keeper belt to compare to titan will be able to test their
hypothesis further.
Discussion: I chose this article because I would like to see if their hypothesis is correct and saturns moon
titan has the same nitrogen properties as comets from the Oort cloud Verses comets or asteroids from
the Kuiper belt.

ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 30 April 2014.
Summary: Astronomers have found a runaway star cluster that is believed to be thrown out of its
globular cluster named hypervelocity globular cluster 1 (HVGC-1). While studying the cluster it is from
M87. A computer analyzed the information for this cluster and any oddities that were found were
examined and found to be minor glitches but HVGC-1 is real. They believe in the center of M87 is two
super massive black holes and HVGC-1 ventured to close and was flung away at a tremendous speed.
Discussion: Found this article interesting that it might have two black holes while most only have one.
As well as Astronomers have seen stars and their binary counterpart flung away from their galaxies but
this is the first globular cluster.

Summary: In this article about the sun, states it has an atmosphere called the corona which is 12 solar
radii or 12 times the suns mass. It is made up of solar particles and the magnetic fields swarm solar flares
erupt and columns of material rise. It says in the article that NASA is planning to send a solar probe or
Solar Probe Plus (SD) as NASA calls it. The mission will directly measure the density, velocity and
magnetic field of the solar material there[.] (SD).
Discussion: I found this in interesting that NASA is planning on sending a satellite to the sun and will be
the first ones that have ever been so close.

Entry # 9- Technology link to Astronomy
July 22, 2014
Source: Best Of Astronomy. Google Play. Insta Research Report, Jul. 1, 2014. Web. Jul. 17,
2014.
Summary: I went the easy route and found an app on google play which has the latest new from
books, astronomers out in the field, and videos. The app has a search button for convenience or
you can select a subject or area of topic and read all about it.
Discussion: If I would have found this app sooner I probably would have gotten my previous
journal entries from it.
Entry #10-Black Holes

match black holes' pull: Long-neglected magnetic fields have an unexpected presence."
ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 4 June 2014.
Summary: Researchers have been doing studies of how a black hole could sustain a magnetic
field, and until recently have found proof that they can and do. They have found evidence from
76 different black holes that they can sustain an electromagnetic field and the electromagnetic
fields can even have as strong a gravity as the black hole.
Discussion: Even though the scientist had just a theory they were able to test it to see if it was
true or not. In the long run they were just waiting for evidence from real black holes to confirm
that there tests were true. I find it inspiring that we are able to find and prove new things
everyday.

telescope." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 10 July 2014.
Summary: Yale University astronomers pieced together telephoto lenses, which are generally
used for sporting events like the world cup, and pointed them up at the sky. They were shocked
Owen 5
to find seven dwarf galaxies, all of which might possible be satellites to M101. They named the
telescope dragonfly due to the fact it looks like an insects eye.
Discussion: Its crazy to think that we are still developing and finding new ways to apply the
technology we have to find different objects and purposes for what we might use every day. Its
also weird to think that these astronomers might have been the first to piece together telephoto
lenses to look at the sky.

Entry #12- Big Bang

Source: Royal Astronomical Society (RAS). "Small, but plentiful: How the faintest galaxies illuminated
the early universe." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 7 July 2014.
Summary: This article starts off with the big bang theory as we know it. After what banged the
universe was just a hot ionized matter, after it started to cool we started getting formation of stars
and galaxies. Upon studying smaller galaxies, more than 10 million solar masses, in computer
simulation scientists concluded these galaxies contributed nearly 30 percent of UV light to the
early ionized universe.
Discussion: It is amazing what and how scientists come up with these ideas that help our
understanding of the universe. I know it is due to the fact of years of study, trial and error, but if I
was faced with the situation to think of these things I would fail.
