Building 79

Common Core State Standard grade 1 Number and Operations in Base Ten:
The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and one, two, three, four, five, six,
seven, eight, or nine ones.

Objective:
Students will understand the one units are represented differently than the tens.
Students will be able to build numbers out of manipulatives (11-19).

Students need to understand:
A ten unit is the equivalent of ten one units and is therefore ten times larger than a one
unit
Numbers 11 through 19 include a ten unit

Students need to know:
How to build the numbers 11 through 19 with manipulatives

Materials:
Promethium board, popsicle sticks, beans, boxes, Legos, wooden blocks, pattern blocks
unifix cubes, colored tiles, Lincoln Log, and the marble run set.

Activities:
1) To set up, write the number 79 on the promethium board, place several boxes of varying items
toys and math manipulative in the center of the circle. For 21 students, there will be seven boxes.
Boxes include Legos, wooden blocks, pattern blocks, unifix cubes, colored tiles, Lincoln Logs
and the marble run set.

2) Circle up the students using the standard To the circle song.

3) Show them the number 79 that is already written on the promethium board. Remind them of
our traditional classroom methods of building numbers in the class, by drawing lines and dots,
and by using the beans and Popsicle sticks.

4) Now point to the boxes in the center of the circle and say: Okay, now how can we build it
using these? Call on students in the circle. Build their ideas.

5) Tell the students what is going to happen next. Inform them that if they play with the toys and
manipulatives in an inappropriate fashion they will sit out. Tell them that as a group they will
build the number 79 using the items from their box. When they are done, raise their hand and I
will come over to check on them. They will then be given a different number.

6) Split the class into 7 groups and send them to 7 tables, each group with a different box. First
send one group and have them demonstrate the right way to go to their tables first. Then send the
other groups, encouraging them to follow the first groups examples. Each group will build the
number 79 using the items from their box. When they are done, they will be given a different
number.

7) At the end, obtain the classes attention using the 1,2,3 all eyes on me method. Say: Okay,
put all of your pieces back in the box and place the box at the carpet. Have one group
demonstrate the right way. Then send the other groups.

Assessment:
To assess student understanding of place value, I will interview students as they explain their
models.
