Dear Parents,

During Unit 1, your child will extend their work from third grade with whole numbers. They begin with
large numbers using familiar units (hundreds and thousands) and develop their understanding of
millions by building knowledge of the pattern times ten in the base-ten system on the place value
chart through the millions. He or she will compare numbers which leads directly into rounding, where
their skill with isolating units is applied. Rounding to the nearest ten and hundred was mastered with
3-digit numbers in Grade 3. In Grade 4, your child will learn to round to any place value.
He or she will continue to develop fluency with numbers when solving problems with addition and
subtraction. They will also use their knowledge of the traditional algorithm for adding and subtracting
to solve word problems that develop a deep understanding of the concepts being used. Contained in
this letter, you will find math vocabulary, video resources for each standard, and ideas on how you
can help at home. Thank you for being an active part of your childs fourth grade learning
experience.
