Welcome
Greetings Parents, Guardians, Loved Ones,
or anyone seeking information about how to
help your student succeed and better
understand the system of education your
student is a part of.
This brochure is meant to give you an
overview of how I will be monitoring the
growth, both personal and educational, of
your student. It is very important to
understand the systems put in place and the
expectations they need to demonstrate in
order to succeed. It is also important to keep
open communication about issues and other
information which may help your student.
The success and growth of your student is
very important to me and the ABC School. It
requires a team to support a students
growth. You are an important part of this
team as it takes learning at both school and
at home for a student to reach their true
potential.
As you read this, if you have any questions
or comments, please do not hesitate to
come see me or contact me in any of the
ways I have provided on the back of this
brochure.
Thank you for your interest and involvement.

Yours Truly,

Mr. Matthew Martin
H.Ba, B.Ed, OCT

How Are Marks Decided?
How does my Student show
improvement and succeed?
Marks are made after careful consideration
of the assessments done during the term.
Types of Assessments:
Assessment for Learning- figuring out
what students know before a lesson
begins.
Assessment as Learning- self and peer
evaluation. Setting goals and next steps
Assessment of Learning- the evaluation
of what students have learned (projects,
tests, etc.)

How are units and lessons
created?
Units and lesson are created using the
Backwards Design Model and follows these
steps:
1. Selecting Purpose: What should students
learn?
2. Selecting Curriculum Expectations which
will be covered (available at
edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum). This can
include ideas from several subjects.
3. Considering Assessment of Learning- What
will the students need to do at the end of the
unit for the final assessment?
4. Considering Assessment for Learning- How
will we find out what students already knows
or think?
5. Planning Tasks- What lessons or activities
will get the students ready to complete the
final assessment
6. Planning Teaching Strategies- How is the
information best delivered to the students?
7. Planning Additional Assessments- How will
we know the students understand what they
have learned?
8. Gathering Learning Resources (books,
readings, field trips, etc)
Other Considerations
Success Criteria- the elements needed
in order to succeed in a unit. These are
outlined at the beginning of each unit.
Achievement Chart- the curriculum
required knowledge and thinking skills
which will be evaluated.
Student Profiles
All students will have a student profile created
which will outline their interests and learning needs.
Your input would be welcomed in order to create an
accurate profile to best help your student.

How is my student supported in this
process?
Supporting students is the centre of planning and
assessment. The following are all taken in to
consideration:
Differentiated Instruction: All students have
different learning preferences and needs (i.e Visual
Learners). Lessons and assessments will reflect
those needs and will set up students to succeed.
Adaptations and Accommodation: Some students
require certain changes (i.e. adapting certain
expectations) or assistance tools (i.e. the use of a
screen reader) in order to succeed. These are based
on careful consideration by the learning team, which
includes you!
