COURSE CONTENT

Design of engineering experiments: Treatment of experimental data and interpretation of results.
Experiments with a single factor: the analysis of variance. Factorial designs. Curve fitting
methods, Interpolation and extrapolation.

Formulation of physical problems: Mathematical modelling of chemical engineering processes
based on first principles.

Analytical solutions of equations: Separable forms, homogeneous equations, exact solutions,
singular solutions.

Numerical solution of non-linear equations: Linearization of nonlinear equations. Numerical
solution of ordinary differential equations: Initial value and boundary value problems. Stiff
differential equations. Numerical solution of partial differential equations.

Optimization: Types of optimization problems, optimization of a function of single variable,
unconstrained minimization, constrained minimization.
