Classroom Management Plan/Philosophy of Education

As an educator, I have a group of diverse students. I need to teach them in ways that meet all of their
needs academically, emotionally, and socially. Students come with many different strengths and
abilities. Students come with pain, and joy, and all sorts of backgrounds. One of the biggest challenges
is to create a classroom culture that builds on their strengths as well as their weaknesses. Personal
challenges affect learning and relationships with the classroom. If I am aware of my students and their
personal struggles in and out of the classroom, I can increase my repertoire of understanding the
meaning of behavior and the one that is being ehibited in my classroom. It is my job to provide the
most effective techni!ues for learning to take place.
"lassroom management begins before the students even enter the classroom. A well managed
classroom re!uires planning and organi#ation. $hen planning activities, I need to take in account that
development of solutions for possible management issues. A smooth running class re!uires prevention
techni!ues for misbehavior. I understand that in order for prevention, I will need to know my students.
%ot every plan in going to work. I think it&s important to reali#e that in order to make a classroom the
best it can be. In order for smooth transitions, and preventing time for students to become off task, I
must know where everything is in my classroom. 'ore importantly, I need to have materials ready. If
students are waiting for me to sort out letters for word work, the more opportunity there is for them to
make poor choices or engage in inappropriate behaviors.
(here are several things that make a classroom an effective learning environment. It all starts
with me) the teacher. I feel it&s essential to greet students at the door with a bright smile in order to set
the tone for the day. It says, *I am so happy you are here. $e&re going to have a great day together.+
"oming into the classroom, students will know they are in a safe and respectful environment. In order
to establish the proper work environment, students should have an assignment waiting on their desks
before they walk into the room. Instructions will be given to them immediately to avoid off task
behaviors caused by confusion. Students will understand what is epected of them. 'y epectations
include showing respect, responsibility, and readiness to learn. 'ost of the typical rules found in a
classroom fall under those categories but if a student isn&t complying with a rule, I will simply ask,
*Are you showing respect right now,+ An eample of this could be a student talking while I am
teaching.
-pectations, procedures, and conse!uences will be discussed and made as a class. Students
will take part in how the class will run and what they feel an affective classroom looks like. (hese
epectations and procedures will be consistent in my classroom. Once epectations and procedures are
established, every student will be held accountable. "onse!uences will be used for every time any
students breaks a rule. If I have student that rarely misbehaves, it&s easy to let that students& misbehavior
slide. .owever, other students may see it as favoritism and it might result in losing respect from my
students. Every time any student breaks a rule, they will be epected to serve the same conse!uence as
any other students.
I love planning interesting, varied, and challenging learning activities. -nthusiasm in my
teaching models how important it is to learn. I invest a lot of time creating lessons, activities, games,
and projects that my students will enjoy.
In my classroom, we will also work out goals we want to achieve as a class. (his can be a
weekly goal, monthly goal, or annual goal. (he goals can be to make friends, improve writing skills,
increase reading fluency, or just to their best. -very student will be epected to come up with a goal. As
an educator, I often hear, *$hy do we have to do this,+ If goals are set, students will be able to develop
their own motivation and monitor their personal progress. /ewards for these accomplishments will be
predetermined by the students. $ith each goal, they will decide their own rewards. (hey can come up
with reasonable rewards, choose from a brochure that I have made, or they will come up with a reward
as a class such as a pi##a party, choice movie, or field trip.
$illiam 0lasser&s "hoice (heory will be implemented in my classroom. .is theory states that a
person&s behavior is inspired by what that person wants or needs. -very student has their own
individual wants and needs in order to learn to their fullest potential. Students control their behaviors to
fullfill their need for satisfaction and survival, to belong, and be loved by others, to have power and
importance, freedom and independence, and to have fun. -very student will have the power to change
their lives for the better based on the choices they make. Students will be allowed to make the proper
choices and take greater responsibility for their actions by asking themselves the following !uestions1
$hat do I want, $hat am I doing to achieve what I want, Is it working, $hat are my plans or
options, If problem behavior occurs in the classroom, I can also ask my students these !uestions. (his
theory has found student&s learning and retention increased as well as overall student satisfaction in the
classroom. I want my students to be held accountable for their actions. $hen students are constantly
told what to so and what not to do, this is where problem behaviors occur. (hat&s why class
epectations need to be clear and addressed often. I feel it&s important that students learn to be
independent. I would like to teach them things that will be used in the real world. I want my students to
be responsible for their learning and their accomplishments. 'y students thank me after a fun lesson
and when I give them rewards. I look at them and tell them, *2ou are the one3s4 that worked so hard.
2ou deserve it.+ I don&t reward them because I want to. I reward them because they are doing well.
the end of each day, my class will have a class meeting. $e will discuss what went well and
what didn&t go well on that particular day. Students will share their thoughts and epress their feelings
and needs. I will model each day by presenting something that was done well and something that we
could work on to improve the classroom. I may need students to write independently if they don&t want
to share their feelings with the class. (his will allow me to implement any new necessary procedures
and5or epectations, provide a community building activity, or simply plan for a class meeting where I
present some concerns and ideas on how to reach individual needs. 'y students will know that they
can always come to me with concerns and something will always be done about it. 6ltimately, the class
meetings will determine if changes need to be made to the classroom in order to make a more effective
learning community and build personal relationships.
"ommunity building is essential. (here will be many community building in my classroom. I
feel that community consists of knowing each other, having a role, and working together. (here will be
several activities for students to learn about each other. -very day, I will ask my students a !uestion. I
will first write it on the board so they can take some time to think about it. (hey will be asked to write
it down in their daily writing prompt journals. $hen everyone has completed their entry, I will whip
around the room to hear everyone&s answer. (hey will have the option to read what they have wrote
from their journal or give a simple answer. Some !uestions will include1 *$hat is your favorite movie,
$hat is your favorite animal,+ Some !uestions may re!uire deeper thinking. 7or instance, *If you met
a genie, what 8 wishes would you wish for, If you met5found a cyclops, what would you name him and
what would you do together,+ Some students may chose to use their imagination and create a short
story. I encourage any type of writing. (hese !uestions will allow students to get to know each other
more and most likely spark friendships based on similarities. Student roles will also be implemented at
the beginning of the year. (hese roles include line leader, paper distributor, paper collector, etc.
-veryone will have a role. -ach day5week, the roles are rotated. I also plan to implement centers
in the classroom as a way to practice material, social skills, and teamwork while also meeting
individual challenges. -ach student will feel a sense of belonging and reason. (hey will also develop a
deeper understanding of responsibility.
(wo of my main focuses of the classroom environment will be respect and honest. /espect is
etremely important in a classroom community. Students need to feel self9worth and acceptance by
their peers. I have #ero tolerance for any student treating another student poorly. .onestly is also
important. (hroughout the school year, my class will practice the use of honesty as well respect.
.onesty will allow students to truth each other.
I believe that if there is a strong community, the amount of learning will be unimaginable.
