Albemarle High School
Rooms 15, 17, 25

Course Description and Goals:
Courses in the Community-Based Instruction Program (CBIP) are designed to assist students in
developing their academic, independent living, and vocational skills. The goal is for our
students to integrate into community life and to be as independent as possible. The emphasis
is on achieving each students individual goals and objectives, gaining vocational experience,
and accessing a variety of resources in the community.

Community-Based Education
As part of this program, students will participate in community trips to places such as the
library, restaurants, and job sites. Please see the attached permission form for more
information about community trips. Also, please be sure that your child is dressed
appropriately based on the weather. Community trips will take place regardless of weather. It is
recommended that you send an extra pair of clothes for your child to keep at AHS in case they
get wet in the community or dirty during activities such as cooking.

Vocational Training and Job Sites:
In addition to academics and life skills training, CBIP students will be required to work at various
job sites throughout the school and the community. Vocational education placements will be
based on student needs, interests, availability of the various job sites. You will be notified by
your childs case manager if your child is chosen to participate in any vocational training away
from Albemarle High School.

Aligned Standards of Learning:
Instead of taking SOL tests, students in the CBIP program are assessed using the Aligned
Standards of Learning (ASOLs). CBIP students in eleventh grade will participate in the Virginia
Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP). The VAAP will measure students mastery of the ASOLs.

AHS School-wide Expectations:
Please see the Common Syllabus information that was sent home on the first day of school.

Classroom Expectations:
On the first day of school, we will review the following rules from last year and allow students
to give input and make changes where appropriate:

Keep your hands and feet to yourself: No hitting, punching, or kicking
Be nice: No teasing, think before you speak, no spitting, no biting, no
whining/complaining, dont take stuff from others
Follow directions and listen to teachers
Stay in supervision/let teachers know where you are going
Respect yourself
Grading:
Students will be graded daily on their progress towards IEP goals and their participation in the
classroom. Each day, students will earn a number 1-5 for their IEP goal progress and a number
1-5 for their participation. Those numbers will be added together for a daily grade out of 10
possible points per class period. Grades will be updated on Parent Portal every 5-7 days. CBIP
classes will be pass/fail but students may earn letter grades in their elective classes.

Exams:
While students do not have an exam in CBIP we are going to do a culminating assessment at the
end of the year. Each student will be assessed on the functional skills that have been taught all
year in the community field trip setting. If students participate in this assessment, they will not
need to report for the exam period in June.

Honor Code:
Students are expected to adhere to the following: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility,
Caring, Fairness, and Citizenship.

Contact Information:
We appreciate hearing from parents by phone or email and will respond to you within 2
business days.
