College Prep Math

Ms. Heller
2014-2015

Required Daily Materials: a pencil, textbook, notes, paper and a scientific calculator. I
suggest keeping a binder with all of your math materials, however your method of
organization is up to you.

Grading:
Homework: 10%
Homework will not be assigned daily, but on the days that homework is assigned, it is
mandatory that you complete the homework. Points for homework assignments will be
awarded for completion of the assignment.
Class Work/Projects: 10%
Class work and projects will include class participation, any work completed in class as
well as projects that are assigned. Although it falls under class work, if there is an
assignment assigned in class and you do not finish that assignment, you need to finish it as
homework. For all projects, I will provide you with a grading rubric
Homework Quizzes: 15%
Homework quizzes will be unannounced and given over random homework assignments.
These quizzes will consist of questions from the homework or questions of similar nature
as the homework assignment. Homework quizzes are a good way for me to keep track of
your progress during a unit as well as a self-assessment of how well you are doing.
Quizzes: 25%
Quizzes will be given sporadically during each unit. They are designed to monitor your
progress during a unit and leading up to the unit test. Quizzes and homework quizzes are
different; quizzes will cover more material and will be graded as such.
Tests: 40%
Tests will be given at the end of each unit or chapter and are designed to be a
comprehensive assessment of our understanding of the material covered in that unit. I will
be happy to assist students via extra practice or answering any questions before the test.

Classroom Expectations:
1. Arrive at class prepared and ready to learn. This means you should be in your seat
when the bell rings and have all of your materials with you when you. The necessary
materials will vary from day to day, but always plan on having a pencil, notes, textbook,
paper, and assignments that are due.
2. Attendance: Unless you are excused from class for the day via the schools attendance
line, you are expected to be in class. Class begins when the bell rings at the start of class
and does not end until the bell rings. I intend to use every bit of instructional time which
means you are in your seat when the bell rings and you stay seated until I say that class is
over. If you are late to class, it will be noted. Three (3) tardies will result in a detention
with me either before or after school. If you miss an assignment due to an excused
absence, you are able to make up that assignment in the same number of days you have
missed class. For example, if you miss two days of class, once you return to school, you
have two days to make up the missing assignment. All assignments will be posted in
Progressbook.
3. Missing work: In order to make up missed work, you must come in before or after
school; missing work may not be made up during class time. After the allotted number of
days to make up your work due to an absence, students grades will be deducted 10% each
day the makeup work is still missing.
4. Be Respectful. This classroom is going to run on respect. I expect that you will respect
me as your teacher, just as I will respect you as my students. Anything less will not be
tolerated.
5. Use a pencil. This is math class. Everyone makes mistakes in math class and should
therefore use a pencil. If you turn in homework, class work, homework quizzes, quizzes or
tests that are written in pen, it will be an automatic 5% off of your grade.
6. Cell phones and other electronic devices are not to be used during class time unless I
give you permission. There are days when we will use technology during class, however
on all other days, it is not permitted. If I see you using a cell phone or any other
technology when I did not give you permission, I reserve the right to take away the device
for the remainder of the class period.
7. Academic Dishonesty will not be tolerated. Students are expected to review and
conform to the districts academic dishonesty policy, which can be found in the student
handbook. If a student violates this policy, a zero will be given for the assignment, a
phone call home may be made and the dishonesty will be reported.
8. Dont be afraid to ask questions. My goal is for every student to learn to the best of their
ability. If I dont know you have a question, I cant answer it. I will be available most days
before and after school for extra help or to answer questions that were not covered during
class time.

Topics that will be covered include:
Equations and Inequalities
Functions and Graphs
Polynomial and Rational Functions
Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
Trigonometric Functions
Trigonometric identities, inverse functions and equations
Applications of Trigonometry
Topics in Analytic Geometry
Systems of Equations and Inequalities
Matricies
Sequences, Series and Probability

I am looking forward to working with you and having a great school year! If you ever
have questions, I do check my email all the time so feel free to stop by before school, after
school or send me an email.
