MESSAGE TO PARENTS & STUDENTS:

Section 1_ Academic Goals

Our World Language classes incorporate the 5 Cs of the American
Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL):

World Language Learning Standards include:

Communication Students write & speak in a language other than English; Interpret &
present information in a language other than English.

Cultures Students develop awareness of other cultures.

Connections Students make connections to other content areas; Access & connect
information through various media.

Comparisons Students investigate the nature of language & culture.

Communities Students become an active global citizen by experiencing languages &
cultures in multiple settings.

1.2 In-Class Participation

In addition to regular in-class oral participation, students will earn participation points for
performing special duties in their class community. Students will be assigned to special
community duties which will benefit the classroom. Student duty assignments will change
with regularity.

1.3 Outside-of the-Classroom Participation
Students will earn additional participation points for reviewing at home their class notes &
in-class activities using the target language (TL = ex. Chinese, French, Spanish) or through
attendance in cultural events. These additional opportunities will be discussed in class and
noted on weekly class agendas. Proof of these practices & experiences will be noted on the
students participation log with a clear parent signature & description of experience.

Section 2 Classroom Community Expectations for Positive Behavior

2. Citizenship
Students are expected to work cooperatively in the classroom community and help maintain
a positive and productive atmosphere. Students are expected to follow the Discipline Plan.
In the rare event students fail to meet the expectations, a series of consequences will result.

DISCIPLINE PLAN FOR GRADES 6- 8

CLASSROOM RULES

2.1. Have all appropriate materials and supplies at your desk and be seated when
the bell rings.
2.2. Follow essential rules we make at the beginning of the school year.
2.3. Observe all rules in Westlane's student handbook. NO GUM!

IF YOU CHOOSE TO BREAK A RULE

1st Phase: Student receives verbal warning (koufen). Teacher documents the offense.
2nd Phase: Teacher contacts parent(s) when 4
th
koufen occurs.
Excessive tardies are reported to Main Office.
Student loses Agenda Book pass privileges &/or other classroom or
Westlane privileges.
3rd Phase: Teacher writes referral to Assistant Principal. AP assigns In-School
Suspension or After-School Detention.

SEVERE DISRUPTION: STUDENT WILL BE SENT TO THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY.

REWARDS FOR YOUR COOPERATION

Section 3 Procedures

3.1. Starting Class - When you enter the room for class, follow the steps below:
1. Pick up any handout(s) from the class tray by the Mailbox.
2. Be seated immediately.
3. Copy Daily class agenda and homework posted into your Agenda Book.
4. Be ready to follow Teacher or Student Assistant(s) directions.

3.2. ASSIGNMENT Completion Expectations:
1. All assignments will be posted on WestlaneChinese.Weebly.com
every other day. (Use the QR code to get on Westlane Weebly)
2. All assignments are to be completed appropriately and on-time.
3. Each completed assignment is evaluated for proper completion.
4. Students are responsible for correcting their errors, asking
questions and clarifying any doubts. The Teacher will provide
answers orally & with visual answer keys, if necessary.
5. Students are encouraged to participate orally in providing their
correct answers as part of the learning process.

3.3. QUIZ/TEST RE-TAKE Opportunity:
A student may retake a quiz or test if s/he
1. earns less than 80% the first time.
2. makes an appointment in advance with Teacher to ensure the schedule is open and that
transportation is secure, if needed.
3. re-takes to be given before or after school with classroom teacher.
4. The new grade will be no higher than the lowest B- earned in the class.
5. Semester, End-of-Course and other district exams are not eligible for retakes.

Section 4 Signals

Use the following signals to respond to the Teacher or to receive help without disrupting
others.

4.1. The Quiet Signal


The Signal: The teacher claps her/his hand 3 times. Students repeat.
Students say Kan Laoshi (which means Eyes on the Teacher) after clapping.

The Expected Behavior of this signal:

1. Eyes on Speaker (teacher)
2. Mouth quiet
3. Be still
4. Hands free
5. Listen

4.2 I Need Your Attention Signal

The Signal: The Student raises his/her hand without blurting out and uses a finger(s) to
indicate a need.

1 - I wish to ask or answer on the lesson.




2 - I wish to leave my seat. Ex. I need to use my
passport/agenda book. I need to go to the restroom/my
locker/the clinic.

Section 5 Community Involvement

5.1 Job Descriptions for Classroom Community Participation
The following opportunities are available to earn participation points in the classroom. Points are
earned only on the day the student performs the job. All students must use specific skills when
performing their jobs. They include:
good people skills, and good time management skills.
good listening skills, and being familiar with all community members by name.
being a thorough and reliable note-taker.
using neat & legible handwriting; and must have good attention-to-details skills.
being dependable and trustworthy.
being an industrious worker, well-mannered and courteous to all.


5.1.1 Administrative Assistant: (uxio lo sh)
Reward: +4 participation points/day Time: During class period

The Administrative Assistant helps the Teacher with classroom routines including:
o starting class by updating the daily agenda on the whiteboard.
o announcing homework written on the homework board
o distributing participation coupons to students who have excelled in their class
participation
o answering the phone

The Administrative Assistant will provide support to substitutes in the Teachers
absence.


5.1.2 Point Keeper: (:j fn yuan)
Reward: +4 participation points/day Time: During class period

The Point Keeper is responsible for keeping track of oral participation for all
community members on the Master Point Board, by recording a point for each time a
member responds appropriately in class discussions, presentations or review sessions.



5.1.3 Secretary: (|m sh)
Reward: +3 participation points/day Time: Beginning of class period

The Secretary assists with attendance at the beginning of class and records any tardies
as determined by standards set by the Teacher.
The Secretary may be asked to check, desk by desk, to see that each class member has
the appropriate class materials. Any missing materials will be noted.
The Secretary takes one set of notes for absent students using the special
SECRETARY paper located in the front of the classroom.
The Secretary will attach the notes with a paper clip to any additional handouts
equaling the number of absent students and place them in the proper location noted by
the Teacher near the Bulletin Board by the Door

5.1.4 Classroom Monitor: ((bn zhng)
Reward: +4 participation points/day Time: Beginning & End of class

The Classroom Monitor will Start and End the class with a procedure (will be taught
in
class)once the tardy bell rings.
The Classroom monitor monitors the class stacking crate, the trash and textbooks.
The Classroom Monitor checks everyones agenda book while the AA announcing the
homework.


5.1.5 Point Taker: ((ku fn yun)
Reward: +4 participation points/day Time: During class period

The Point Taker gives warning(s) to members who are not following classroom rules.
The Point Taker records points OFF for each time a member misbehaved in the
classroom.


5.1.6 Distributor: (/f sng yun)
Reward: +3 points/day Time: During class period

The Distributor check the distributor mailbox and returns graded papers once
entered the room.
The Distributor passes out workbooks (& other books) if required that day in class.

5.1.7 Collector: (+|shu jin yun)
Reward: +3 points/day Time: During class period

The Collector collects assignments/quizzes from students (by rows) and delivers them
to the turn-in mailbox or the Teacher.
The Collector collects workbooks (& other books) at end of their use in class.
