What is Six Sigma and which Company uses the system
Overview of Six Sigma
Six Sigma is a management philosophy that emphasizes setting extremely high objectives, collecting data, and analyzing results to a degree as a way to reducing defects in products and services. The Greek letter sigma is sometimes used to denote variation from a standard. The philosophy behind Six Sigma is that if you measure how many defects are in a process, you can figure out how to systematically eliminate them and get as close to perfection as possible. In order for a company to achieve Six Sigma, it cannot produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities, where an opportunity is defined as a chance for nonconformance. It is a standard, as well as a certification; six sigma is a quality philosophy and the way of improving performance in terms of where you are in the firm and where the firm could have been. It is a methodology to measure and improve companys performance and practices and systems. This system is used to measure

6 Sigma Methodologies The fundamental objective of the Six Sigma methodology is the implementation of a measurement-based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of Six Sigma improvement projects. This is accomplished through the use of two Six Sigma sub-methodologies: DMAIC and DMADV. The Six Sigma DMAIC process is an improvement system for existing processes falling below specification and looking for incremental improvement. DMAIC is an acronym for the five phases that make up the process: Define the problem, improvement activity, opportunity for improvement, the project goals, and customer (internal and external) requirements. Measure process performance. Analyze the process to determine root causes of variation, poor performance (defects). Improve process performance by addressing and eliminating the root causes. Control the improved process and future process performance. The DMAIC process easily lends itself to the project approach to quality improvement encouraged and promoted by Juran.
