Course Syllabus
Wind Ensemble
Course Specific Information

Wind Ensemble will perform at Octoberfest, Instrumental Winter Concert, Major Work
Concert, BCPS Assessments and Instrumental Spring Concert. These dates will appear in
the Instrumental Handbook and will be on the music website. All performances are
mandatory and will be 40% of your grade as listed below.

Members of the Wind Ensemble are expected to audition for Baltimore County All-
Honors Band. Failure to do so will result in a zero test score and possible reconsideration
of your membership in Wind Ensemble. Please know that in special circumstances your
audition can be video recorded, and therefore a date conflict is not excused. This
expectation is aligned with expectations for students enrolled in a GT level class.

Grade Policy

Participation (50%)
Music is a performance based, process-oriented subject. In order to be successful in this
course, it is essential that students fully participate in the process of our daily learning.
Participation points are deducted for non-participation, disruptive behavior
(including talking excessively, disrespecting another student, teacher and/or
property) unexcused tardiness, unexcused absence, and/or unpreparedness.
Students may earn additional participation points for demonstrating exceptional
effort.

Performances (40%)
Your performance grade includes your attendance for the full duration of the
performance as well as your preparedness, timely arrival, and concert behavior. All
performances are mandatory and it is required that you be on stage at the designated
warm up time. Only in extreme circumstances will a student be excused from a
performance, and those students will be required to do a written assignment in its
place. Students are responsible for getting this make up work on their own. Doctors
appointments, work, sports team obligations and vacations are not valid excuses.

Written Assignments and Projects (10%)
Students will complete written assignments and projects that develop their
comprehensive understanding of music. Students are also responsible for knowing all
material discussed in class. This includes information about individual pieces, composers,
history, cultures etc. It is recommended that students keep a small notebook in their
music folder to take notes.

Marching Band will be included in both your participation and performance grade for
the fall semester.
