Antarctica , the coldest and driest continent in the world and acts as the 'world's

freezer' stores 90% of the world's freshwater ice and 70% of the planet's freshwater.
Antarctica may not be famed as a tourist's destination but any chaotic changes to its
environment will cause dire consequences for the inhabitants of the earth. Any changes in the
atmosphere and global ocean around the world will directly affect Antartica and like wise
changes in Antarctica willundoubtedly affect the rest of the world.
As early as 1970, researchers and scientists from all over the world flock to
Antarctica to conduct various studies about the 2 km thick ice that covers an area of roughly
5.4 million square miles (14 million square km), about one-and-a-half times the size of the
United States. Knowledge about what takes place underneath, inside and to Antarctica itself
its fundamental to ensure the onslaught and survival of the future generation of mankind and
other living things. Although the Antarctic Treaty System cautions the world about the
fragility of the Antarctic environment but real and immediate threats like regional warming,
ocean acidification and the loss of sea ice have challenged the sanctity of this treaty.
In recent decades based from data collected from satellites and weather stations,
certain part of Antarctica has warmed up by 0.1 Celsius per decade. Evidence from studies
have identified carbon dioxide emission as the cause. The escalating effect of global warming
due to the carbon dioxide emission acts as a catalyst to melt the ice of Antarctica. As a result
of the gradual meltdown of the Antarctica, a profound effect on the entire planet is
unavoidable. The melting ice flows into the ocean causes the sea level to rise as there is an
increase in water. The hike in sea level causes flood to occur along coastal area and damage to
hones and farmland. Consequently, a food crisis is eminent globally. The melting ice also
affects the temperature of the sea water globally.
