1.1 A steam boiler generates steam at 30 bar, 300C at the rate of 2 kg/s.

This steam is expanded

isentropically in a turbine to a condenser pressure of 0.05 bar, condensed at constant pressure
and pumped back to boiler. a) Draw the schematic arrangement of the above plant and T-S
diagram of Rankine Cycle. b) Find heat supplied in the boiler per hour c) Determine the
quality of steam after expansion d) What is the power generated by the turbine? e) Estimate
the Ranking efficiency considering pump work.
Hint: P1= 30 bar, P2= 0.05 bar, T1 = 300C, m= 2 kg/s
From Super-heated steam table @ 30 bar & 300C find Enthalpy h1 and Entropy S1
From Pressure table @ 0.05 bar Sf, Sfg then find x by equating S1=S2
and hf & hfg then find h2= hf2+hfg2
h3 = hf at P2 from pressure table
Considering the pump work h4-h3=vf at P2(P1-P2) find h4
Heat supplied Qs = m(h1-h4)
Power generated by the turbine WT= m(h1-h2)
Rankine efficiency = WT-Wp/Qs
= (h1-h2)-(h4-h3) / (h1-h4)

Reheat Cycle Problem
1.2 In a steam power plant operating on an ideal reheat Rankine cycle, the steam enters the high-
pressure turbine at 3 MPa and 400C.After expansion to 0.6 MPa, the steam is reached to
400C and then expanded the low-pressure turbine to the condenser pressure of 10 kPa.
Determine the thermal efficiency of the cycle and the quality of steam at the out let of the
low pressure turbine.

5.1 Find the cost of generation per kW-hr from
the following data:
Capacity of the Plant - 140 MW
Capital cost Rs. 1400 per kW installed
Interest and depreciation 12% on capital
Fuel Consumption 1.4 kg/kW-hr
Fuel Cost Rs.45 tonne
Salaries, wages, repairs and maintenance-
9,00,000/year. The maximum demand is 80
MW and load factor is 45%

5.2 Determine the generating cost per unit of 90 MW
power station with the following data:
Capital cost Rs. 170 x 10
7
, Annual Cost of Fuel =
Rs.38 x 10
6
, Annual wages and taxes = 15 % of the
Capital Cost, Annual load factor = 40%.

5.3 A central power station has annual factors as follows:
Load factor = 50 % : Capacity factor = 45%, Use factor =
50%, power station has a maximum demand of 18,000 kW.
Determine Annual energy production, Reserve capacity over
and above peak load, hours per year not in service.
