Tuesday Notes on Slide 5, HW on Slides 6 and 7

Notes: Subtract Integers on Number Line
Using the number line Remember that if you are subtracting, your
zombie should be facing towards the left. The sign of the second number
decides if he steps forward (farther left) or backward (towards the right).

Your parents learned: To subtract an integer, add its additive inverse,
p q = p + (-q)
-3 5 = -8 6 (-2)
-3 5 = -3 + -5 = -8
6 (-2) = 6 + (
+
2) = 8
9/2 Subtract Integers on Number line
Draw a number line for each problem. Be sure to also show the problem with the
additive inverse.

1. 14 17 2. 14 (
-
10) 3. -4 8 4. 4 (-19)

5. 52 (-52) 6. -6 9

7. Write a subtraction sentence using integers. Then, write the equivalent
addition sentence and explain how to find the sum.
8. Use the table to answer the
following questions.
a. What is the difference between the highest elevation in Alabama and the
lowest elevation in Louisiana?
b. Find the difference between the lowest elevation in New Mexico and the
lowest elevation in California.
c. Find the difference between the highest elevation in Florida and the lowest
elevation in California.
d. What is the difference between the lowest elevation in Alabama
and the lowest elevation in Louisiana?

9. Yoshi is finding -15 (-18). Find his mistake and correct it.
State Alabama California Florida Louisiana New Mexico
Lowest
Elevation (ft)
0 -282 0 -8 2842
Highest
Elevation (ft)
2407 14,494 345 535 13,161
-15 (-18) = -15 + (-18)
= -33
Subtract Integers Using Number Chips
Using the chips When we subtract the chips, we actually move them off
of the board. The hard thing to remember is that sometimes there dont
seem like there are chips but there are secretly zero pairs floating around
which we are able to remove.

Your parents learned: To subtract an integer, add its additive inverse,
p q = p + (-q)
-3 5 = -8 -6 (-4) = -2
-3 5 = -3 + -5 = -8
-6 (-4) = -6 + (
+
4) = -2
Subtract using Integer Chips
Model each problem using number chips. Be sure to also show the problem with the
additive inverse.

1. 7 6 2. 5 - (-3) 3. 6 (-2) 4. 5 - 8

5. -7 (-2) 6. -7 3 7. -5 (-7) 8. -2 (-9)

9. Write a subtraction sentence where the difference is positive. Use a positive and a
negative.

10. How is the number chip model for the problem -6 7 related to the way your
parents learned to deal with positive and negative numbers (additive inverse)?
11. Circle an expression that is equal to the expression in the
first column. The first one is done for you.
-3 1 -3 + 1 -3 + (-1) -3 (-1)
a. -2 9 -2 (-9) -2 + 9 -2 + (-9)
b. -8 4 -8 + 4 -8 + (-4) -8 (-4)
c. 6 (-2) 6 + 2 6 2 6 + (-2)
d. 5 (-7) 5 7 5 + (-7) 5 + 7
e. -1 (-3) -1 3 -1 + 3 -1 + (-3)
f. -3 (-8) -3 + 8 -3 8 -3 + (-8)
