COURSE DESCRIPTION
This year, students will complete a study of the following units:
Energy Effects Weather, Climate, and Me
Chemical Properties Cells, Cell Division, and Genetics
These units are based upon the Battle Creek Science Program that students have been using in earlier
grade levels. This program relies heavily on classroom discussion, hands-on activities, cooperative
learning, and student demonstration of learning through journaling.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY
Homework: Any work not completed in class, is considered homework and is to be taken home,
completed, and returned the next day.
Studying for a quiz, or test, is considered homework.
Complete assignments and turn them in at the time collected. Late assignments will not be
accepted for credit. Absent work will receive full credit if turned in within a week of the date
due. Exceptions for extended absences will be made on an individual basis.
If a student misses an assignment, they are required to take home a homework slip and get a
parent signature. The homework slip states the reason why a student missed an assignment,
and informs parent(s) of which assignment the student missed.
Assignments could be grade two different ways. First, they may be graded on a credit/no credit
basis. Secondly, specific problems on the homework assignment will be graded for accuracy. If
the assignment is not completed, the problems not completed will be marked incorrect. If the
assignment is not available at the time it is to be graded, 0 points will be given and the
assignment can't be completed for credit at a later date.
Any assignments turned in without a name will receive a 0.
Content Quizzes: Content quizzes will be given in class. They will help me determine whether or not
the students understand the material. Quiz dates will usually be announced, but some pop quizzes may be
given.
Tests: Most tests will be written. Students are expected to review the material and take the test on the
assigned date. In case of an absence, students should be prepared to take the test on the day of their
return. Exceptions may be made on an individual basis.
Projects:
Projects will be assigned periodically throughout the year.
Projects are to be turned in on the due date. Any projects turned in late will receive a 10%
deduction in points, if turned in within three days past the due date. Projects turned in later
than three days late will receive a 25% deduction in total points earned.
Labs: Lab work will be done as class demonstration, or within cooperative groups.
Science Journal/Notes: Each student is expected to keep a science journal to record class notes, field
experiences, and class discussion items. Journals will be collected for review and will be graded.
Participation: Students are expected to participate and contribute equally to group work. Participation
grades will be determined by how well students work with their peers.
Materials:
1 3-ring binder to hold notes and handouts 2 Pencils
