the study guides, the worksheets, the lectures, the activities that we did. 16.
the way she let us know what to study that away we would really learn something rather than trying to crame
alot into your head to just puke it out on a piece of paper.
17.
Doing hands on things 18.
Very personable, easy to talk with kind of profressor 19.

The skills introduced and practiced in this lab

What aspects of the teaching or content of this course
were especially effective?
very detailed power points that made it easier to understand the lecture 1.
I loved turning in the notecards everyday-- being able to have your questions answered daily helped a lot. I
also love Polando's teaching style: she puts everything into layman's terms so that you can think of it outside of
the science state of mind. She used a lot of examples that made understanding the most complicated scientific
processes a lot easier.
2.
She was very willing to go above and beyond to help all of us. 3.
I liked that the quizzes were given on the reading before the material was covered in class. It gave me an intro
into what the lectures would be about so that I could better understand them.
4.
the chapter quizes were effective because they made you have to read the chapters 5.
Videos 6.
use of teaching material outside of textbook was helpful to learning material, having various links and
worksheets made course effective. set up for what class teaches, straightforward as labs are relevant and
helpful. daily notecards indicating attendence and ability to ask questions with quick response were helpful
when needed
7.
Slideshows 8.
Took questions and addressed them during class when the class was struggling 9.

answering the questions on our notecards 10.
Dr. Polando was very enthusiastic and was willing to step back and recover concepts if they weren't clear. The
content was well organized and presented in an order that made sense.
11.
There were plenty of examples given and any questions were discussed extensively 12.
The lectures were explained in detail and the students were able to submit note cards with questions on them
from the lecture.
13.
videos 14.
the pipe cleaners 15.
The professors availability to answer questions. 16.
making the DNA with pipecleaner!! 17.
the videos really helped 18.
. 19.
I liked the fact that previous exams were available for us to study. 20.
The use of diagrams really helped me to learn...and the fact that we could use diagrams on tests to explain was
efficient for visual learners.
21.
Dr. Polando always made time for questions, extra help, and general career advice. 22.
The professor was very accessible and always open to assisting a student in need 23.
The main concepts of each chapter were made very clear which made learning and studying much easier. 24.
I would use something else than powerpoint. It was boring toward the end of the semester. 25.
The online quizzes motivated me to read the chapter before coming to class 26.
The return to previous material, as well as simple, "graspable" metaphors for concepts. 27.
Notecards 28.
processes 29.
Asking questions on note cards to be answered by the instructor 30.
The powerpoints were very helpful. They helped me study and to get a better idea of what else I should look at 31.
Videos. 32.
Having hands on examples to learn things was helpful 33.
What changes could be made to improve the teaching or
the content of this course?
none 1.
Maybe breaking down the chapters for the online chapter quizzes-- reading 40-50 pages just for a 10 question
quiz was a lot to handle. Breaking up the quiz over the week would maybe work out better.
2.
none! 3.
I would change how effectively the power points are detailed, it caused some issues in studying when things
were not clearly labeled, and some bullets were left open ended.
4.
the grading seemed to be different from person to person 5.
Not so boring power point presentations. 6.
i found the class most interesting when the reason these molecules are used in the body were explained, the
applications of each molecule and the importance they serve
7.
Direct feedback on tests why thing were wrong; class held grammar too high of priority on papers, etc. 8.
None 9.
the movies help in the power points but more words to explain the videos would have helped me 10.
The labs were very interesting, but a little more background on the procedures and specific techniques used
would be helpful.
11.
Not be put in the PERC. The class room was not set up well for her style of teaching 12.
When the quizzes are put on angel, after the first try the student should be able to see their answers so that they
cane do it right the second time.
13.
none 14.
Homework maybe 15.
the course is fine the way it is. 16.
Manchester University Course Evaluation Reports https://gateway.manchester.edu/_layouts/course_evaluation_reports/...
6 of 7 5/12/14, 12:11 PM
the quizzes didn't really help me, i didn't really like the book 17.
i can't think of any major changes besides informing students of when a quiz is due its easy to forget 18.
none 19.
I do not think anything needs to be altered. 20.
The reading quizzes had glitches frequently! 21.
I think the book content was extremely difficult to understand and the quizzes we took i feel like many of the
answers I ed were correct from my interpretation but they were counted incorrectly....I HATED THE BOOK,
and it was not useful for the tests or my understanding. I think we should have done more in class activities as
well because sometimes just learning from the power points made me uninterested and sleepy.
22.
Adding a 3rd lecture hour may allow for a more detailed development of the material. That said, the time we
did have was used very efficiently
23.
The power points were nice to go back and study from, but maybe do something different every once and
awhile so it isn't the same thing all the time.
24.
More videos to help students understand essential biological concepts. 25.
none 26.
The quiz material could have been over more "vital" information 27.
none 28.
more interactive projects 29.
study guides for tests 30.
The lectures could be pretty boring and it was hard keep focused. I'm not really sure how this could be
changed.
31.
Less cramming of the information. 32.
... 33.
