Most crochet and k nitting pattern instructions will provide general sizing information, such as the chest
or bust measurements of a completed garment. Many patterns also include detailed schematics or line
drawings. These drawings show specific garment measurements (bust/chest, neckline, back, waist, sleeve
length, etc.) in all the different pattern sizes. To insure proper fit, always review all of the sizing
information provided in a pattern before you begin.
On this website are several sizing charts. These charts show Chest, Center Back Neck-to-Cuff, Back
Waist Length, Cross Back, Sleeve Length, Upper Arm, Armhole Depth, Waist and Hip. THESE ARE
ACTUAL BODY MEASUREMENTS FOR BABIES, CHILDREN, WOMEN, and MEN in both inches
and centimeters.
When sizing sweaters, the fit is based on actual chest/bust measurements, plus ease (additional inches or
centimeters). The chart entitled Fit recommends the amount of ease to add to body measurements if you
prefer a close-fitting garment, an oversized garment, or something in-between.
Fit Chart
Very-close fitting: Actual chest/bust measurement or less
Close-fitting: 12"/2.55cm
Standard-fitting: 24"/510cm
Loose-fitting: 46"/1015cm
Oversized: 6"/15cm or more
The Length Chart provides average lengths for childrens, womens
and mens garments.

Men Mens length usually varies only 12"/2.55cm from the
actual back hip length measurement (see Man Size

Both the FIT and LENGTH charts are simply guidelines. For individual body differences, changes can
be made in body and sleeve lengths when appropriate. However, consideration must be given to the
project pattern. Certain sizing changes may alter the appearance of a garment.
How to measure
1. Chest/Bust
Measure around the fullest part of the chest/bust. Do not draw the
tape too tightly.

2. Center Back Neckto-Cuff
With arm slightly bent, measure from back base of neck across
shoulder around bend of elbow to wrist.

3. Back Waist Length
Measure from the most prominent bone at base of neck to the natural waistline.
4. Cross Back
Measure from shoulder to shoulder.
5. Sleeve Length
With arm slightly bent, measure from armpit to cuff.
6. Upper Arm
Measure around the widest section of the upper arm located above the elbow.
7. Armhole Depth
Measure from the top outside edge of the shoulder down to the armpit.
8. Waist
Measure your waist at the smaller circumference of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button.
9. Hip
Measure at the widest part of your lower hip.
10. Head
For an accurate head measure, place a tape measure across the forehead and measure
around the full circumference of the head. Keep the tape snug for accurate results.

11. Sock Measurements
The following measurements are for crew-style or dress socks, which usually come several inches above
the ankle and below the calf.
11a. Foot Circumference: To determine the foot circumference, measure around the widest part of
your foot.
11b. Sock Height:
To determine the height of the sock, measure from where you start to turn for the heel shaping to the top
of the sock.
11c. Total Foot Length: To measure the total length of your foot, place a ruler or tape measure on the
floor. Position the back of your heel at the beginning of the tape and the measure to your longest toe.

Tie a string or ribbon around your waist, where you bend
naturally not too tightly, just snug, and horizontal. This will help you to take the vertical measurements
accurately. Move around, bend from side to side and so on until it sits comfortably.
Remember to stand up straight (but not overly so) with your weight evenly distributed.
Bust (1) measure horizontally around the fullest part of your bust along the nipple line, and straight
across your back. It helps if you stand with your back to a mirror, with the person measuring you in front
of you, so that they can see in the mirror that its straight across your back. Remember to lower your
arms.
Natural waist (2) breathe normally, and dont suck in your stomach. Measure around your waist along
the ribbon, horizontally.
Hips (3) measure horizontally around the widest part of your hips. Note the level where youre taking
this measurement at one side.
Waist to hip (4) measure down your side from the waist tape to the level where you took your hip
measurement.
Front shoulder to waist (5) measure from the middle of the top of your shoulder down over the apex
of your bust, straight down to the waist tape.
Chest (6) - Measure across your chest from armhole to armhole, about 7cm (3) below the hollow of your
throat.
You're halfway there!
Shoulder (7) Measure from the base of your
neck to your shoulder bone.
Neck size (8) measure around the base of your neck, touching the collarbone below the hollow of your
throat.
Nape to waist (9) bend you head forward and feel around for a protruding bone at the back of the base
of your neck. Put the end of the tape measure here and straighten up, then measure down the centre of
your back to the tape around your waist.
Back width (10) measure the width of your back around 15cm (6) below your neck bone. The ends of
the measurement fall where the armhole seams of a close-fitting top would lie.
Armscye depth (11) The armscye is the armhole, the fabric edge to which the sleeve is sewn.
Measure from that bone at the back of your neck straight down your back to a point level with the bottom
of your armhole. It may help to place a ruler under your arm, but make sure its level and not too snug
(you dont want the armhole to be too tight!)
Dart for our purposes today, this is a standard measurement that's related to your bust size. Refer to the
table below to find the "dart" for your bust size.
