Comparing Graphs

All of the graphs below have qualities that are good and qualities that need to be improved. One of your
objectives in all science classes is to be able to produce quality graphs. Creating quality graphs is also a
component of the lab reports that you will be writing for all of the science classes you take in the Deer Valley
district.

As you look through the graphs below, consider each of the following: 1) Are the X- and Y-axis labeled with
specific details? 2) Does the graph contain a title that contains specific details? 3) Does the graph utilize the
space provided (or is it really small)? 4) Are the numbering systems used on the X- and Y-axis consistent? 5)
Is all of the data graphed within the provided space?

This is an assignment that I will be looking for on your Weebly website. Create a new tab titled Assignments
under your Chapter 1 Tab. If you forgot how to do this, there is a YouTube video that I have uploaded to my
class website that will walk you through the process. You can then add this assignment on your newly created
Assignments page. This can be done in one of two ways: 1) Use the Text tool and you can simply type
your responses onto the webpage or 2) Download this assignment to your computer (it is found under Student
Resources, Weebly Assignments. You can save it, type your answers directly onto it, then use the
Document tool on Weebly to upload your saved document. Students who use option 2 will receive extra
credit.

Graph 1:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
Graph uses the providing space; Y-axis spaced out consistent

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
X and Y axis are not specifically labeled; No title; X-axis is inconsistent with numbers; Graph goes beyond the
grid

Graph 2:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
Graph uses the provided space

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
X and Y arent specifically labeled; No title; X-axis isnt consistent; The graph isnt taking up the grid

Graph 3:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
X and Y axis is specific
X-axis is consistent

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
No title
The graph is really small
Y-axis doesnt have any numbers
The graph doesnt take up most of the grid

Graph 4:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
The graph does take up most of the grid; The X and Y axis is consistent; The graph is graphed in the provided
space

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
The X and Y axis isnt labeled; No title
Graph 5:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
X-axis is labeled with specific details; Y axis is consistent

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
Y-axis isnt labeled at all; No title; The graph is small; X-axis isnt consistent; The graph doesnt take up most
of the grid

Graph 6:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
X and Y xis is consistent in numbering

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
X and Y axis arent labeled; No title; The graph is too small; The graph doesnt take up most of the grid

Graph 7:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:

Identify what could be improved on this graph:

After having identified the pros and cons of each of the seven graphs above, identify which graph is the BEST
graph. Use evidence from your notes that supports your answer. Solidify your answer by making comparisons
between your selected graphs and the other graphs provided.

The best graph was Graph 4, because it had the most pros out of all the other graphs. Graph 4 had 3 good
observations, while Graph 1 (2 good things), Graph 2 (1 good thing), Graph 3 (2 good things), Graph 5 (2 good
things), and Graph 6 (1 good thing) had less. Graph 4 took up the majority of the grid while Graph 2, 3, 5, and 6
did not.
