Day: 7 (Tuesday) Year Level/Stage of learner: Grade 2/3
Time: 2pm-3pm KLA: Technology
Engagement Describe the strategies the teacher uses to engage the students. Highlights expected outcomes of the lesson prior to leaving the classroom. Sit at your computer and log on once we get to the library I need to make sure you can do these things yourself so you wont be allowed to ask a friend or ask us [the teachers] This lesson is teacher led and therefore students have to follow clear instructions. When we are at the library I need you to be quiet and have your listening ears on so you can follow my instructions.
How does the teacher provide opportunities for the students to engage with the lesson? All students are highly encouraged to participate appropriately as it is an outcome they must meet. It was discussed with students that this is a requirement they must meet. If students have fallen behind during delivery of instructions the class will wait till they catch up.
How does the teacher engage the students prior knowledge? The students had already been shown how to type, change text size and font, and insert a picture into a word document from their class file.
List the language used by the teacher to engage the students. Very clear, concise and detailed instructions for students to follow. The teacher waited for all students to be quiet before giving subsequent instructions.
How do students indicate their engagement? Describe the behaviours. Students: Listen for instruction Complete task appropriately Remain quiet throughout the lesson Fold their arms when task is completed
Building Knowledge What strategies does the teacher use to help students build their knowledge? The main strategy used in this lesson is to review and retain what has been taught in the past by undertaking the same or similar lesson. TEACHING AND LEARNING CYCLE SCAFFOLD FOR FORMAL LESSON OBSERVATIONS Building Knowledge Continued. What strategies does the teacher use to evaluate whether the students are acquiring the new knowledge? This lesson is based around an evaluation of whether the students have acquired the knew knowledge. The teacher has used a class observation sheet to record whether or not each student achieves each task given.
Transformation What teaching strategies are used/learning experiences provided that give students the opportunity to apply their new skills and/or knowledge? This lesson follows on from the prior weeks technology lesson where the students had learnt how to insert a picture into word, therefore the students are applying and retaining their new skills,
How does the teacher support those who are in need of extra help? As the aim of this lesson was to see whether the students could meet these requirements themselves, those that needed assistance were asked to leave what they have done and move on.
What strategies does the teacher use to manage the different levels of learning in the classroom? All students, for this lesson, are at the same level. However, I would like to highlight that children that usually require help in the classroom had forgotten how to complete the required tasks and found it difficult to comprehend that we were unable to assist them and therefore they tried to ask questions.
Presentation What opportunities are provided for the students to present the new skills and/or knowledge they have acquired? The tasks in this lesson required students to present their photo of themselves and their bug with text on a word document. Therefore, the students were learning how to present their works.
How does the teacher manage the presentation of their new skills and/or knowledge? Students were asked to: Type My bug and I Change the font to Jokerman Centre the font to the middle of the page Find and press enter Insert their picture of themselves and their bug Resize their image so that the image remains in proportion. These were requirements of the students and also a method of showing the students appropriate presentation of their skills. Reflection What strategies did the teacher use to enable the students to reflect on their learning in this lesson? Students could see visually what they had retained from last weeks lesson and what they had not. The students weren't told individually what they achieved and didn't achieve however, and overall positive comment was made to the class as a whole.
Did the teacher explain, and the students understand, why they were learning this new material? The students clearly understood that these tasks were important to show their teacher they had learnt this and achieved the outcomes.
Did the reflection process enable the students to make links between what they know, their new knowledge and where they might go next? This lesson allowed the students to make links from what they know and have learnt and to a degree where they may go to next. Students understand that they are required to achieve these tasks in order to proceed further in their acquisition of skills and knowledge.
Transition How does the teacher manage the transition to the next lesson? As the end of this lesson was the end of the school day, after students had shut down their computers they were reminded of what was happening over the following days and what they were required to bring to school, then dismissed.
What strategies are used? Students were moved to the floor for the conclusion of their lesson so they couldnt fiddle with their computers. The teacher waited till all the students were showing whole body listening before she proceeded. Students were dismissed in small groups by the month they were born in to reduce the amount of children making their way through the door at once.
