Comparing Graphs

All of the graphs below have qualities that are good and qualities that need to be improved. One of your
objectives in all science classes is to be able to produce quality graphs. Creating quality graphs is also a
component of the lab reports that you will be writing for all of the science classes you take in the Deer Valley
district.

As you look through the graphs below, consider each of the following: 1) Are the X- and Y-axis labeled with
specific details? 2) Does the graph contain a title that contains specific details? 3) Does the graph utilize the
space provided (or is it really small)? 4) Are the numbering systems used on the X- and Y-axis consistent? 5)
Is all of the data graphed within the provided space?

This is an assignment that I will be looking for on your Weebly website. Create a new tab titled Assignments
under your Chapter 1 Tab. If you forgot how to do this, there is a YouTube video that I have uploaded to my
class website that will walk you through the process. You can then add this assignment on your newly created
Assignments page. This can be done in one of two ways: 1) Use the Text tool and you can simply type
your responses onto the webpage or 2) Download this assignment to your computer (it is found under Student
Resources, Weebly Assignments. You can save it, type your answers directly onto it, then use the
Document tool on Weebly to upload your saved document. Students who use option 2 will receive extra
credit.

Graph 1:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
- Most of the graph paper is used.
- Y axis numbered consistent,

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
- Neither x or y axis are labeled with details.
- No title
- X axis numbered inconsistent
- Data extends above grid

Graph 2:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
- Used most of the graph paper for x-axis.

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
- X axis numbered inconsistent.
- Neither x or y axis are labeled with details.
- No title.

Graph 3:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
- Both y and x axis are labeled with detail.
- Both y and x axis are numbered consistent.

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
- No title.
- Graph paper could have been taken more of an advantage of. Data could have been spreaded out making it
easier to comprehend and giving it a nice appeal.

Graph 4:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
- Used most of graph paper.
- Both x and y axis are numbered consistent.
- Bars have nice appeal.

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
- Forgot to begin graph with 0.
- Both x and y axis are missing labels with details.
- No title.

Graph 5:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
- Numbers on both y and and x axis are consistent.
- Most of the graph is used.
- Graph starts with 0.

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
- No title.
- Neither x or y axis are labeled with details.
- Can label the measurements in which the height of students is being measured in.

Graph 6:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
- Used most of graph paper.

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
- Both x and y axis are numbered inconsistent.
- Missing a title.
- Missing labels with details.

After having identified the pros and cons of each of the seven graphs above, identify which graph is the BEST
graph. Use evidence from your notes that supports your answer. Solidify your answer by making comparisons
between your selected graphs and the other graphs provided.

In my opinion graph number 3 is the best out of all 6. Even though it contains no title and the data could have
been spreaded out more, the graph begins with 0 and both y and x axis are numbered consistent. Both x and y
axis are labeled with detail and the x axis demonstrates the measurements in which the students were measured
in (inches). While graph number 2 begins with 55 and skips two spaces, then skips to number 60, graph number
3 begins with 0 then shows the viewer that itll skip to number 50 so that graph paper isnt wasted with
unnecessary data, it then begins to be numbered consistent.
