Dear Parents/Guardians, We are a week into school and happily settling into our Grade 3 class getting to know the rules and routines this new school year at S.E.A.S. It promises to be a very busy year in grade 3. I am really enjoying getting to know and work with your child. We have a student with a life threatening allergy to nuts. Please ensure that your child brings nut-free snacks and lunches to school. The school day begins at 9:10 am Morning recess is from 10:25 10:40 There is a 20 minute lunch break from 11:55 12:15 Lunch recess is from 12:15 12:55 Afternoon recess 2:10 2:25 The school day ends at 3:40 I would appreciate it if you could send in a couple of large Ziploc bags, and a pair of headphones for your child to use when we use the netbooks. Once again this year the Grade 3s will be using an Agenda as an organizational and communication tool. While the goal is to promote and encourage each childs sense of responsibility and independence, your valuable assistance is very much needed to ensure the success of this program. Please take the time to read, and initial, your childs agenda every night. The agenda will also be posted on the class website http://mrsagrade3seas.weebly.com/ each night.
Our school board spiritual theme is Restore one another is a spirit of gentleness. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton school has decided to bring this to life by becoming Bucket Fillers. Our school wide bucket filling philosophy is that kind words and acts fill each others invisible buckets and fill our own invisible bucket as well. Dipping into someone elses bucket by hurting them does not only empty their bucket it empties your bucket too. You can ask your child a little more about it. They have become bucket experts. The Grade 3 curriculum is available online at www.edu.gov.on.ca. Please check it out to familiarize yourself with what your child will be learning this year. In this first term in Math, our focus will be on Patterning, Number Sense & Numeration, and Data Management. I strongly encourage you to practise addition and subtraction facts to 20 with your child. Mathematics is a subject that builds, and it is very important for your child to have a solid recall of Math facts. This knowledge will reduce their anxiety as they move into more challenging areas of math. Other areas we will be studying in Math this year include Measurement, Geometry, Algebra, Probability, Problem Solving. We will use both Direct Instruction and Math Inquiry to explore math concepts. During the second term we will introduce the concept of multiplication. The children will be learning their multiplication facts to 7 x 7 by the end of this year. In Language Arts, we will be focusing on comprehensive literacy by using Literacy Place (Guided and Shared reading groups), our book cart on wheels, working with words, as well as taking part in the Global Read Aloud. The Grade 3 children are encouraged to read aloud at home for 15 20 minutes as frequently as possible. Reading aloud develops fluency, pace and expression. To improve comprehension, take the time to ask your child a couple of questions about the selection they have read. Science topics include Plants, Soil, Forces, and Structures. French is the last block every day. We also have Religion, Family Life, Art, Drama, Dance and Music scheduled on a regular basis. Physical Education is scheduled on outdoors on Mondays, and in the gym on Thursday and Fridays. We will visit the library on Thursday afternoons. Our class began using Class Dojo on the first day of school. This program assists students in having timely feedback on their Learning Skills so that they can make personal goals for improvement. Please dont hesitate to contact me at school should you ever have any question or concerns regarding your child or his/her progress. I look forward to working with all of you this year.
