In the Beginning…

Gibson ES-series
 Cherry Red finish w/ black pickguard
 Cream binding on body
 Bound neck w/ either block or trapezoidal inlays
 Nickel hardware
 Tune-o-matic bridge
 2 pickups (neck and bridge)
 4 control knobs – 2 for volume, 2 for tone
 Lyre tailpiece w/o cover
 Notes:
o This appears to be Steve’s first guitar, as it’s mainly seen in photos of him as a
kid & teen

1960’s Gibson Les Paul Junior


 Tobacco-burst finish w/ black pickguard
 Black Dogear P-90 pickup (bridge)
 2 Control Knobs – 1 for volume, 1 for tone
 Notes:
o Used during his days with the bands Smokehouse. Crawdad and Detroit

1958 Gibson Les Paul Custom


 Black finish w/ black pick guard and white trim and bounding
 Bound rosewood neck with block inlays
 Open Coil pickups (neck and bridge (coil-splitter))
 Nickel hardware
 Gold speed knobs
o The top tone control had a push/pull switch to transfer the bridge pickup to a
single coil.
 Notes:
o Used only on I Know a Little, T for Texas, You Got That Right and Freebird

 It’s unknown if Steve ever used the Fender once he became a full member of the band.

o Steve Gaines used this for the intro to I Know A Little
o He can be seen holding this guitar in studio shots of the band members during
the recording of Street Survivors
