Homework Policy
It is very important for your child to establish a
homework routine so that he/she will develop good study
habits for the future. It would be beneficial to your child for
you to set aside a quiet place and allow sufficient time for
your child to complete their homework.
At the beginning of each week, your child will bring
home their homework packet. This packet contains
homework for the entire week. Have your child complete
the assigned homework each night and hand in only that
nights assigned homework. This packet is not meant to be
completed in one sitting; however, there may be times
when you double up on homework one night to
accommodate your schedule. The homework that is being
sent is used as a tool to help reinforce the skills that are
being taught in school.
Throughout the year, if you have any concerns about the
homework please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Areas of Focus for
First Grade Students:

Here at Southern our goal is to provide your child with a
well - balanced education that best fits their individual
needs. In order to maintain this high level expectation, it is
important that we all work together to achieve this goal.

Reading/Language Arts: The students will learn the skills
necessary to complete the following tasks:

The writing process
Inventive Spelling
Word Families
High Frequency Words
Identification of main characters, setting, problem, and
solution, beginning, middle, & ending

Math: The students will learn how to complete the following
tasks:

Counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s up 10 100
Adding and subtracting numbers
Patterns
Surveying
Fractions
Non-standard measurement
Place value
Money identification & value
Story problems
Telling time to the hour & half an hour with both digital
& analog clock

Science: The students will be using science kits to explore
the following subject areas:

Weather & Me
Solids & Liquids
Organisms

Social Studies: The students will study the following topics
from both the present and the past:

All About Me
Getting Along with Peers & Following the School Rules
Fire Safety
Holidays Around the World
Needs & Wants of a Community
Jobs People Do
Map Skills
National Holidays (Presidents Day, Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day, etc.)

Reading
During the course of the year, your child will be learning
vocabulary that goes with the Harcourt Series Storytown.
This series incorporates phonetic sounds, blending sounds
into words, rhyming, and sight vocabulary on a daily basis.
Below you will find a list of areas that are focused on in 1
st

grade.
Fluency - reading with a flow as in oral conversation
Reading Comprehension - After reading a selection,
your child should be able to retell, in their own words,
important details from the story.
Stamina - The ability to do independent activities for
extended periods of time.
Running Record - Your child will be asked to read a
selection for the first time and, using reading strategies,
make minimal errors in reading.
Writing:
Your child will be writing on a daily basis and throughout the
year the expectations will shift. We start with writing one
sentence in the beginning of the year. This progresses to
writing a story with a beginning, middle, and end to our title.
We focus on complete thoughts or sentences. Printing with
spacing is essential to reading our work. Capitalization and
punctuation must be evident.
Math:

The Colonial School District math curriculum is called
Investigations in Number, Data, and Space (TERC). While
solving problems, your child will be using materials such as
pattern blocks, geo blocks, unifix cubes, and other
manipulatives. He/she will also be writing, drawing, and
talking about how to think through a problem. Throughout
the year, look for letters that describe some of the activities
your child is involved in at school. Your child will need your
participation in playing games and gathering data for some
homework assignments.

need to speak with your childs teacher, it is important that you
make an appointment. Teachers are not available to conference
with parents during their teaching time.

Supplies:

provided by the school. If there ever comes a time when there is a

our classroom on a daily basis.

Grading:

The students class work and assessments will be graded using
district created rubrics. A rubric is a 3-4 point assessment tool which

the school year. Report card grades will be determined by a
combination of rubric scores, classroom assessments, and daily
