Week 4 - Plenary Week 4- Double Lesson Plenary - What is Abstract Art? Use artistic language when discussing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kdzG AjG26s Discussion Who feels they like abstract art? Who feels they dont like it?
TASK 1 - Analyzing Artworks - Compare and Contrast (10-15 mins) Red Canna, 1924 by Georgia O Keeffe Flowers in a Porcelain Vase by Ambrosius Bosschaert Record analysis in your DW. Ansel Adams Discuss images using artistic language. What do you think the artist is most concerned with? What other artists have you looked at so far that you consider to be similar to the work of Adams? TASK 2 - Analyzing Artworks - (10-15 mins) Week 4 Art History From Reality to Abstraction Georgia O Keeffe
We may also use reality as a source of inspiration for abstract work. Artist Georgia O'Keeffe used flowers as inspiration for her work (as pictured below).
What influence did the American Southwest have on O'Keeffe's art? OKeeffe drew inspiration from the vivid colors, organic (curved) shapes, and bright light she found in the desert sky and rolling hills. She incorporate natural found objects such as desert flowers and sun- bleached animal bones into many of her paintings.
What can you draw inspiration from? Think about your surroundings? How did O'Keeffe create compositions using natural objects?
One of her favorite techniques was to monumentalize flowers and other natural forms. She changed their scale, enlarging and cropping them until they filled a large canvas. Often, OKeeffe would zoom in on a small, intricate part of a flower such as its stamen enlarging it until it was no longer recognizable. Idea Development Photography AO1 Using school cameras take photos of the flowers provided. Then using one of your photos zoom in one section of the picture to create an abstract piece. You may focus on one principle or element of art if you wish. This photo could be used as inspiration for your painting in the style of Georgia O Keeffe. You will use Acrylic paint and work should be no smaller than A3 but can be A2. You may also choose to work on canvas. Cropping Original Image All of these images were cropped from the original image. Experiment with Different Views Abstract Photoshop Effects Good website resource for Painting Ideas http://painting.about.com/od/abstractart/ig/Abstract-Art-Painting-Ideas/ Take your own high quality photographs of your chosen Natural Forms. Take at least 5 Black and White and 5 Colour. You will mount your best 6 ( 3 B&W and 3 Colour) in A5 size. Consider textures, light and composition. Use the macro setting (looks like a little flower). This allows you to zoom in closer to the object for greater detail. Print a contact sheet for your DW and annotate. ( 2 pages) You will use these photos to form the basis of your future studies and to inform your ideas. Week 4 - Independent Study Plenary Sit together as a group and discuss/crit each others work.
Are you on task and meeting the learning objectives for the workshops?
Are you able to use observation techniques? Is their evidence in both your portfolio and DW.
Are you able to use drawing techniques and media? Is their evidence?
Are you able to understand the use of observational drawing?
